Friend wants to join TalkTalk but...

[link to this post]

as he's just moved into a new flat, the phoneline hasn't been activated yet. According to BT they will activate it, but he'll have to sign up to a 12 month broadband contract with them, otherwise it's 70 to "get out early" and then he can move to TalkTalk.

Is there a way to get his line activated but then go with TalkTalk without signing up to BT's broadband package for 12 months, as that is something he doesn't want.

Any help is much appreciated, Cheers,
Nathan

He shouldn't have to sign up for a 12 month broadband contract just to get the line activated. They might insist on a 12 month voice contract, that might be what the 70 exit fee is for, then he should be free to join TalkTalk.

Thanks for the reply sjr, it is a voice contract BT want him to sign up to. Do you know of any way of just getting BT activate his line, but not have him sign up to any BT deals as he just wants to go with TaklTalk? Surely it's a simple thing to do! BT gets the 10.50 through TalkTalk anyway!

As far as I'm aware BT insist on a 12 month contract with all new line activations. He would then have to work out if the 70 exit fee is more than made up with savings on TalkTalk, but with BT line rental at 10.50 and an anytime call package at 5.95 will TalkTalk save him much over the course of a year?

A way to save the BT penalty hit of 70 is to use the TT Home Mover service. If you are moving to new premises and are an existing TT customer, TT will activate the line. Without Home Mover they won't but they are expected to do so in the future.

Thanks ETEE, but he's not currently with TalkTalk where he's moving from, so couldn't use that unfortunately. He's decided he will just go with BT for the time being.

Thanks for everyone's help
