Increased Charges Breach of Contract

[link to this post]

Last month I was told that the cost of my 'free' BB service (I am with Talktalk 3) would rise from 10 to 12.99 per month as BT were increasing the speped of my 8 Mb service from its curent 1.8 mb speed.

Two things:

The increase to 8 Mb (which I supposedly already had) has been to about 2.2 Mb.

My contract states that the 10 fee will be fixed for as long as I remain a TT3 customer.

Has any one else had this 'offer' and realised that the 30% increase is actually in breach of contract?

TT has yet to reply.

First are the speeds the results from speed tests? Or the speed the ADSL modem says?

What is happening is that TalkTalk are moving people off of the Home 2000 products in some areas and onto BT IPstream Max which will rate adapt between 160Kbps and 8182Kbps. If you only saw a jump of a few hundred Kbps it suggests either a very long line or you need to look at the telephone wiring in your home.

Do you know the actual line sync, attenuation and noise margin figures?

The speed test results are from the Speped Tester that I run regularly.

The line to the exchange is less than 2km as the dog walks. The line tester suggested I should get 5.6k.

I have looke dat my telephone wiring. It is 4 strand plastic covered, but I don't think that is what you meant.

How would I find "actual line sync, attenuation and noise margin figures"

I spoke to TT tonight; two surprises.

First I got through to someone in Northampton. Secondly they immediately agreed to credit my account with 3 per month.

What modem do you use?

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm shows how to get them for most kit and
http://www.farina1.com/adsl takes the figures and gives you speed estimates based on them

Also http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html#235 is worth a read, the ring wire and removing it can have a significant effect for some poeple

I treid the 'remove orange wire' advice but in my case it cut the phone off (not BB tho).

I had a look at the attenuation and snr pages. I have 8128/448 with snr 7.3/21.0 and attenuation of 28/17. I played with the SNR and with a very low SNR set managed about 100 kb speed increase. I then reset to 100% and left it alone.

Urm the obvious thing here is that you are connecting at the full rate of 8Meg already, if only ever seeing 1.8Meg speeds I would suggest a wander over to

http://www.speedtester.bt.com to check your IP Profile if not on the Talk Talk LLU packages, i.e. paying the extra 10 or 15 a month
