Talk Talk BB from my exchange

[link to this post]

I currently have Talk Talk BB "up to 8Mb" and receive around 2Mb. Although my exchange EAHWD is within 900 metres, I understand from my stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2514 kbps 710 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.5 db 31.9 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 9.6 db

that the actual length of cable is closer to 4.5KM. Is there anything I can do to improve the speed?

Just the usual things mentioned in various places.....
Try connecting into the 'test' socket INSIDE your BT master socket (to see if your internal phone wiring is slowing you down.
Remove the ring wire (wire #3) in all phone sockets (or, at the very least, the master socket).
You'll not get much more (2514kbps isn't too bad for a 55dB line, with a noise margin of 9dB).
You could try asking TT to lower your target margin to 6dB, but I'd try the master socket & ring wire tips first (because if you do have internal noise issues, a 6dB target may lead to instability).
You are clearly on either ADSL2 or ADSL2+.
I also have a 55.5dB line, yet connect between 4-4.8Mbps (depending on when I sync) with a noise margin of 6dB; so you may be able to get a little more (but you'll never get close to the magic 8Mb).

Many thanks Ade....I have been debating whether to remove the bell wire or not...but I have old faceplates on my sockets! I have an extra dedicated socket so should I look to work on both or just the socket I use for BB?

I would remove all ring wires.
You say you've "old faceplates", does that include the master (i.e. it's not a split-front, newish style NTE5)?
If you've a really old master, are the extensions plugged in the front, or did you have them hard-wired inside the master by BT?

The main socket was installed in 1988. My dedicated BB socket (and line) was installed in 2002. Neither are Split Front.

Hi Again Ade

Took your advice and removed the ring wire from the master socket...was connecting at 2515....now jumped to 3266. Thanks!

And if you can convince TT to put you on a 6dB target noise margin, you'll probably get another 700kbps!

Here's my story........

I migrated from Sky to TT.

I was generally happy with the re-badged BT product from Sky- getting about 3Mbps. But then they started to throttle me back to 0.5Mbps during peak times.

The only LLU service on my exchange is TT and so I decided to take the plunge.

TT sent me a D-Link router which looked like something from the 1970s and isn't considered a very good router!!

So I reflashed my Sky Netgear router with the DG Team unofficial firmware ....and the rest is history!!

I removed the ring wire and (using the DG Team official firmware) reduced the SNR ratio to 1%.

I then asked TalkTalk (via the TT forum) to put me on a 6db profile.

[All you have to do is post on TT forum and the "Greentops" will pick up your query and (generally) action it.]

After all that I have gone from 3Mbps to 7Mbps

Not something I'd recommend if you're already on a 6dB margin (as that will result in a near-zero dB target margin, and horrendous stability problems); but if you're on a 9dB target, a maximum tweak will set the actual target closer to 4dB (which should be stable enough on all but the longest, or more noisy lines).

I suggest that you register on the TalkTalk Forum

http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/

Do a posting under the 'Speed &Web Browsing' section. There is a sticky at the the top of the this section entitled 'Please Read First'. Complete the questionaire in it and post on the forum. Somebody will be along to help or guide you.

Might not get help from their admin until Monday or Tuesday, being a bank holiday. They are very good at getting problems solved fairly quickly. Don't bother with telephone support, just use the forums. Will try and keep eye open for you.

If you are using XP there is a little tool called TCPoptimizer. If you download this and set your MTU to 1432. Have run this on a couple of computers to great advantage.
