TalkTalk on EMWERRI exchange

We live at the end of a long BT copper line and max speed we have ever got is 4.3MB via ADSL. I am currently on cable and happy to receive around 9.7MB.

I checked recently with BT.com, SKY, whose line checker suggests we could get between 3 and 5 MB dependent on local factors.

HOWEVER we had a call from TalkTalk recently who said that they had put some new equipment in the exchange that could offer speeds for our postcode of around 9MB... I did ask why the speed was double what their competitors could offer but the sales person had no idea why...

ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS?

You need to know your attenuation of the BT line.

But the estimation from BT and SKY does take into account the line length which is 3500 metres, from the
exchange and rings true with the experience we had.

I seem to recall the attentuation was around -55dB when we last had adsl on TalkTalk a few years ago, when the actual speed was 4.3MB.

So the question that remains is what could TalkTalk be alluding to in the exchange? They don't offer FTTC and surely that would be the only way they could increase speed?

Infinity arrives in the new year and BT estimates around 26MB down and 5.8 up...

TalkTalk is giving you a misleading figure...

55dB will not benefit from ADSL2+ at all.

Unfortunately some TT staff seem to say what they think the customer wants to hear in order to get the sale regardless of the truth.

Best you will get from TT with a 55dB atten is about 5Mbps if the line is totally good.

If you want faster than 9Mbps have you asked VM about some of their latest packages. My son is on VM at the end of a long line and gets somthing over 20Mbps via cable.

TalkTalk do offer FTTC but only at exchanges where it's enabled. The only way to double your speed would be line bonding which BE offer, or some other sort of line combining - this would also double your costs as you'd need two phone lines.

If VM cable services are available then long line is not an issue, and the full 10,20,30,50 Mbps options should be available, and in 25% of the VM areas 100Meg is an option.
