Please (and this is truly from the heart), stay away from TT. Whatever they promise. You will get hurt.

i really like TalkTalk..

in fact, they offer a magnificent service through LLU.

And Business LLU is la creme-de-la-creme of TalkTalk's services... absolutely unmetered, unlimited bandwidth for little more than £10 a month.

Is it throttled or shaped? Is the (vague) FUP the same as the domestic FUP?

If so it's a little disingenuous to call it unmetered and unlimited.

So far the Business LLU service has been pretty solid, so no complaints there. Also considering BT Infinity. I don't suppose anyone has seen a comparison of the two?

TalkTalk has said there's no shaping or throttling, and i haven't noticed any signs.. It really is magnificent. And a a price of just £10 a month it's embarrassing for the other ISPs!

What have you tried though? I'm on vanilla Talktalk LLU. I notice for instance my uploads slow from ~90kB/s down to 10kB/s or much less between 6pm and 9pm or later. I also get dropped repeatedly from chatrooms that I've been constantly in for the last 9 years during those times of day. This is with the winmx protocol.

Do you torrent? I know overnight is ok but I'm thinking more of the daytime/evening speeds.

If Opal use the same kit in the exchanges and if the kit decides the shaping etc then I don't see how the service is different. There were some 'ifs' there though smile

You're right Myth. The standard TalkTalk LLU service for a fiver is okay, but nothing special. Bit torrent traffic is definitely shaped. In fact it's as slow as a slug on dope. Yet downloading a blowout ISO of Ubuntu on the same connection was pretty damn quick.. Not exactly a scientific study, but there-yer-go! cheers

i was asking you about your experience on the £10 a month Opal product. Are you saying you torrented the ISO on the £10 connection? and if so what time of day was it.
You say it's unlimited, what is your maximum monthly download you have done?
cheers

ahh. the £10 talktalk business deal, i was told that there is no shaping nor any limit. lye of the land and regulations mean that we can't get freeview or freesat here so we use bit torrent extensively to download tv programmes (thebox and uknova). and since joining talktalk business back in january, we have never exceeded any download limit, if there even is one. cheers

if you have no idea how much you DL in a month just say so, others say there is a 100gb limit.

I can only infer you are DLing all times of the day as you didn't answer my specific question.

I'm assuming this uses the same backhaul as the standard TT offering, so maybe your exchange is less contended than others, or a higher % have paid for the business connection requiring and enabling TT to purchase enough backhaul from your exchange.
Interesting you can't get freesat......buildings or natural features?
Are you semi-rural is what i'm wondering

I don't know how much we download with TalkTalk Broadband.. It is a lot.. I leave the bit torrent client running 24/7 and TalkTalk has never asked me to limit consumption.

Back in Jan 2011 when we joined them, I was verbally told by the TT agen that there is no D/L limit nor traffic shaping on its Broadband product.

As for this locale, it's still an urban area. we are apparently 1027 metres from the exchange. As for lack of Freesat, there is a dense beech(?) tree on the neigbour's land obscuring reception. Freeview is no good either, even though there's a terrestrial "Freeview Light" TV transmitter barely a mile away, but it's in the wrong direction, so the engineer tried to get a signal from one of the main transmitters. We have already spent £400 on several visits to install a new aerial, masthead amp, etc.. and we still can't get ITV1 etc.. We've given up on TV for the time being. So that's why I'm impressed with TalkTalk's service.. It's a shame that BT couldn't find the funding to accelerate FTTC/FTTP rollout before HMG wasted all that cash on the Digital TV rollout.. With a decent fibre service, triple play services would be within reach of most of us.. Cheers.

yeah living near a transmitter is never a good thing.

Interesting info though, I think you must punch through 100gb easy.

Had a look at all our local cabs and none are upgraded to FTTC even though the exchange is enabled. Looks like the Opal package might be an option if there is no downtime.
Thanks

I am genuinely impressed with the technical quality of the service from TalkTalk Business.. I do say that with sincerity. I've got no personal financial interest in the company..

If I were to be hyper-critical then I can catalogue the following problems with Customer Services over the 9 months we've been with TalkTalk..

Repeated emailed requests for a static IP address (FOC) went unanswered. It took 3 or 4 emails to evoke a response. However, the request once acknowledged, was actioned within a few hours..

Request for access to the talktalk web support forums. The request was outright refused on the grounds that the user account number for TalkTalk Business customers is not compatible with the forum software which is only for residential customers!

Several emailed requests to have the 1571 service disabled have been ignored. 1571 causes a conflict with our answering machine.. Those requests date back to May and still haven't been actioned.

In those same emails we also asked for our CLID to be enabled.. It currently presents as "WITHHELD" which we never specifically requested. Maybe that is the default setting. But again, those request to have CLID re-enabled are also unanswered.

All that aside..

The service from a technical perspective has been second to none. We've had several power outages in the nine months we've been with TalkTalk but I haven't noticed a single voiceband or broadband outage in that same period.

Cheers,

IMHO that's not actually very good support from a ISP that advertise them self as a business ISP .

From my understanding there are different levels of support , obviously if you want the premium support you need to pay for it but responding to email is hardly premium type support .

I feel TalkTalk business have gone in to cheap and rather than supplying a premium service to home workers and business users , its seem less well supported than residential customers , who at least have access to the members forum .

my main point is we seem to be getting a growing stream of unhappy TalkTalk business customers , which says to me they have very much got the balance wrong of price VS support .

Edit : growing number is a exaggeration , its only 2 resent complaints but i watch with interest , as we never really got any complaints at all till they changed Opal to TalkTalk business , for obvious reasons .

There are many posts on this forum from people that have been told various things by sales reps trying to get sales and commission that have turned out to be untrue .
I'm not saying they do limit connections on TalkTalk business for over usage but i would take your own experience and that of other TalkTalk business customers over what any sales rep say , any day of the week . ( if you get my drift )
