on going speed issue that carried over to TT

Hi Guys,

I know this is 100% the best place for advice, and this is for my brothers line, we are both currently with talk talk.


Ok here goes,


Speed issue is on going and lasted/currently going for last 4 years. before that dial-up was used,

since switching to ADSL max speed has been around .5mb with drop outs,

ISP history,.

BT, original speedtest showed line capable of 6.5mb,
(joined bt, after couple weeks line settlted at 0.5mb lol)

calls to support were made, engineer visits took place no fault found.,

House is semi detached, neighbor also only gets 0.5mb, everyone else in same street is getting around 6-8mb.

The only difference i see from the rest of street is a joining neighbor is a ham radio guy, and has an Ariel around 60ft high.

seemingly different BT engineers to both adjoining houses said Ariel is not affection speed.

he then switched to Post office BB

they sent BT engineer no change no fault found,

then switched to TT, reported speed yet another BT engineer still cant get no more than 0.5mb if not less for both him and adjoining neighbor.

kinda crazy, like as the street gets further and further from xchange all other houses get solid connection.

my thoughts were must be ham ariel for sure..

what do you guys think?

Need to see the stats from the ADSL modems to comment further, and also you should talk to the radio ham and get them to try turning off all their hardware.

Only interference in the AM radio band should affect ADSL, and if a good ham they will have made sure this is not happening anyway.

will get router stats today, the ham guy is the ajoining house, he only gets 0.5mb also, he also has had several engineer visits from BT from various IP providers, and pretty sure they tried it ham radio off,

his bt guys said ham shouldn't affect BB

The only other strange thing I have notice, ham guy has support wires from his arial , all the way across into my brothers garden they are so high my brothers bt line is resting on the wire before it reaches the pole,

might try and take a picture of of later also and post somewhere online so you can see

That is pretty bad, a phone line resting on the mast supports will not be a great thing, as insulation may have been chaffed.

Attenuation suggests 6 to 7Meg is feasible, something is holding you back noise wise.

its been like this for over 3 years, he kept changing providers in the hope someone would find a solution,next door in my eyes is putting his head in the sand, he wants better speeds also, but refuses to believe it has anything to do with areal lol,

any ideas or steps he can take either ham radio complaints, or BT complaints to get this resolved?

I am also a radio ham, ask the chap to alter his guy wires so that the phone line does not touch it.

If that fails ring Ofcom and get them to check his installation stating why, bearing in mind it will cost you £80.00 for Ofcom to make the check.

If ham is a constant AM user this could well be part of the problem, is the line constantly slow or are there periods of normality?

That may be difficult as it is no longer a licensing requirement to keep a log, unless required by ofcom on a case by case basis.

the the line is constantly slow, and he also gets cut-off totally quite a bit also, id imagine its during ham usage,
