That's old news now.

I accept that the loss of the data is an old story.
But last week a 75 year old lost £1,600. Do you think that TT or Lloyds TSB are going to give the money back?

Probably not, bank details were not stolen in the leak, so it's not really much different from random calls saying "Hello we are Microsoft, your PC is doomed and you need to pay us £299 to fix it".

Having said that, banks can and do reverse charges in cases of obvious fraud. So they should definitely contact their bank ASAP.

Even without the TT breach, these calls can and do happen all the time. Companies sell your phone number on all the time

One of my relatives nearly lost £5000 a couple of months back.

Thanks Mike, that explains how they can do it.
Bottom line is that TT had a lot of data taken by one of their contractors last December. So the scammer already has a load of info.
Point of post is to make others aware that it is still happening..

Most scammers have quite a lot of information, the "Microsoft" scammers knew my details when they rang me. I played along with their scam in a virtual machine and I hung up when they asked me to load Paypal in a browser.
I then left the house, and when I came back I saw that they had tried to ring me literally dozens of times.
In the case of TalkTalk I believe the only extra piece of information gained was the account numbers. But then, I've never had a company verify their identity by reading back my account number.

I've just stopped another this morning in North Somerset.
Beware they are ringing people now.
If you hear the word Teamviewer - you will know you have a problem. They will work on people for over 2 hours.

They never stopped. There are teams in India who have been doing this every day for years to to all English speaking countries.
Here's an excellent youtube video of someone recording a video of a virtual machine showing how they work the scam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjKjyMKj3n4

Interesting. The login page seems to allow pasting so perhaps the twitter pressure worked?

I got bored with being wound up by such calls at home and now have fun with them. My latest wheeze is to drop in animal impressions into the conversation, beginning with a playful bark building to a crescendo with out of control farm yard animals. It's hard to keep a straight face when mooing down the phone to some unknown overseas call center operative, I probably need to get out more!

Id love to get a call from (fake) Microsoft so i could play along with them for a laugh Best fun I had was when the call center guy was as follows :-
CC: Are you at your computer?
ME: Yes
Repeat
{
CC: Can you press Windows flag key and R at the same time?
Me: Yes
CC: What do you see on your monitor?
Me: Nothing.
} Until CC: Is your computer turned on?
Me: No, get lost you scammer.
The repeat section went on for about 10 minutes with pauses at various time where I could hear the CC person asking other people what to do.
