Tiscali user with email issues on a mac

I've got a mate with a Mac, and for the last month or so he has been unable to access his Tiscali email on his iphone or his mac.

We've looked on the internet and tried the TalkTalk and Tiscali server settings and appropriate port numbers with TLS enabled. Everything just seems to result in the message

Unable to verify account name or password.

Incoming POP3 is port 995, TLS security and Authentication method: Normal Password
Outgoing SMTP is port 587, TLS security and Authentication method: Normal Password
Username : [email protected]


He is able to log into the main talktalk website using these credentials and can then access webmail that way.

Can an apple user with a old (legacy) tiscali account confirm the mail settings. I believe my mate would rather use POP3, but IMAP should do just as well....

He's just messaged to say that he was able to set up the account fine in Windows Mail (on w10), so obviously is using the correct credentials.

I was wondering if he is aware of the difference between POP & IMAP? If he uses POP on one system then that would wipe all his emails from the server and would really mean that he wouldn't have any emails to view via IMAP or the web.

He is aware.... and with POP you can you can get it to leave the mail on the server, although I do agree that IMAP is better.

However IMAP/POP isn't the issue here, instead it is authentication/connection issue on collection.

FWIW - TalkTalk have been having some serious authentication issues with some of their legacy email platforms, whilst they try to upgrade and integrate them to their new "all singing, all dancing" email system.

Probably the only way this is likely to get fixed is by TalkTalk technical staff. The chances of getting through to them on the phone at the moment are about zero. So the best option may be to go onto the TT community forums and post the issue there. They do at least seem to be answering issues posted there in 24 to 48 hours - but it will be pot luck.

I've just tried on my iPhone, using Safari, to access TT webmail and it worked fine. No messages, as I use POP on my PC and delete messages from the server.

When I tried to log in to webmail using the Google app on the phone, the TalkTalk sign in page say's the browser is not supported. It let me log in OK, but the rendering was rubbish and the resulting page was unreadable.

EDIT - I just had a look at my Tiscali POP3 settings and it uses ports 25 and 110; the TalkTalk POP3 account uses 587 & 995. The Tiscali account dates back to 2001 and I don't recall if it's settings have ever been changed.

Does he have TT BB? As from 27 Feb TT restricted all their email only to their own BB network unless you pay £5 pm for TT Mail Plus.

It goes a bit further than that, non-BB customers will have their mailboxes deleted if they don't pay the subscription.

Not sure to be honest, but seemed to be able to connect fine from a WIndows based laptop in the house, where as his mac and iphone refused to play ball. That is what made me thinking it must be some weird apple related issue.
