Fibre -Are there 2 router types?

I am looking at getting Talktalk Faster Fibre (38Mbps).

Under the Faster fibre details on the talktalk site it lists the router as "Brilliant Wi-Fi Hub Black".

But under the SuperFast Fibre it says Award-winning Wi-Fi Hub".

Are these both the same?

TalkTalk do indeed have two different WiFi hubs.

The original sagemcom and the newer "black" hub (from Huawei).

Not sure if you get a choice or they just send one or the other randomly.

I moved to FTTC a while ago and was using the router in the first part of the video below they sent me an email asking if i wanted the new hub and said i could renew my contract early and get it free, as i had no intention of leaving TT when my contract was finished i signed up for another 18 month an they sent the wi-fi hub in the video, i am fairly sure all new customers now get the hub.
It is much better than the old version for signal strength and speed.

Yes, there is actually another router 2020 model!

TalkTalk Sagemcom FAST 5364 and now I also received Huawei Router DG8041W-2.T5.

TalkTalk Support forum have just sent me a new router replacement 4 days ago! It is a Huawei Router DG8041W-2.T5. The packaging and router design looks 100% identical to the Sagemcom FAST 5364, I have no idea about the specification differences between these 2 routers.

All I know is that the differences are very similar between these 2 routers.

Now the reason I got sent this new router was because of my complaint that the Sagemcom FAST 5364 router reboots every 30 days by programming design!

I am only 3 months in to my FTTC Fibre Speed Boost package on a 24 months contract.

So they sent me this new Huawei router which is actually a 2020 release model. It is different from the other Huawei Black router HG633/5.

If you sign up to the fastest FTTC package then you will either receive a Huawei Router DG8041W-2.T5 or Sagemcom FAST 5364.

If you request on their forums and specify a technical issue they will probably send you a second replacement with the different model router.

It would be the cheaper 38mpbs product I would be going for. I just find the website very vague with seemingly no details about what the router actually is... which to me seems very strange as the likes of Plusnet and Vodafone for example have links to the exact routers.....

If you ask TalkTalk will tell you that the 2 routers are functionally the same. Although the new Huawei router does not have the channel optimisation that has caused issues with the Sagemcom. TT don't seem to have committed one way or the other as to that being a "future enhancement" for the Huawei router.

But you don't normally get a choice - and the routers are free anyway. As a "standard" end user, you probably wouldn't notice any difference anyway.

Also, there is no automatic 30 day reboot with any TT router. Individual routers may have individual faults, remote management may have issues, channel optimisation may have issues. But there is no 30 day reboot "by design". There only appears to be one report of this issue on the TT community forums, and quite often the forum OCEs will send out a new router as that is quite often easier (and cheaper) than fully investigating what could well be a one off router fault. The OCEs are there as customer service reps, not firmware design and debug specialists.

Lol, that user is actually me. Yes there is 30 day reboot, it has happened on 3 straight occasions where the router rebooted at exactly on the 30th day mark.

Now I complained about this issue and TalkTalk sent me the new Huawei router which would probably rectify the issue. I haven't tried it yet.

Maybe there is an issue with the router, I don't know. Yesterday at 5:45am the router rebooted but this time for firmware upgrade. I had version SG4K10002808t and now its been updated to version SG4K10002810t

Yes, the TalkTalk routers do reboot by themselves at least when it comes to firmware upgrade. This is never manual.

Now I have no idea if this latest firmware update will solve the 30 day reboot. But in my case this is definitely some sort of programming. Here's why! My service with TalkTalk FTTC went live on the 3rd of February and I connected the router at around 1:30pm. At that time on the 30th day connection up-time the router rebooted.

This has happened on multiple occasions. This is not line related or disconnection due to noise as the connection and noise margins are very stable. After router reboots the connection stats remain identical, indicative that the connection was stable, but router rebooted.

Now I've never had this kind of issue before with my previous ISPs. People have documented this in their TalkTalk ISP reviews that their router reboots by itself at least for firmware update.

The BT HomeHub 6 router was also known to reboot every 14 to 30 days. The question is why some routers reboot after 14 days and others after 30 days is a mystery. This is why most people use third party routers as there is no ISP reinforcement when it comes to auto-updates or reboots.

Yes, I guessed it was you on the TT forums - because only one person is reporting this issue.

Are you sure your not mis-interpreting DLM activity on your line ?

And "most people use third party routers" - seriously !
