Price hike, £5.11 but something is fishy

[link to this post]

Hi epyon
We're always looking to make sure our customers get the best value connection possible. However, with more and more devices that rely on broadband, usage on our network has continued to soar. That's why we are continually investing in our network and the full fibre rollout, to help customers benefit from the latest technology, that can deliver faster speeds.
At the same time, our network supplier Openreach has increased their prices based on the peak of the inflation rate in October 2022*. In line with our terms and conditions, the price you pay for your Fibre 900 Data Only will go up by £5.11 from 23rd April 2023. This increase does not include any Boosts, add-on services you currently have, or any discounts you receive on your account.
As a TalkTalk customer, you can always rely on great value, by saving money at any speed, with totally unlimited data and award-winning customer experience.
Thanks for being a TalkTalk customer and relying on us to keep your home connected and provide you with a great value service. You can see your full terms and conditions here.
Your TalkTalk

According to your sig you are using Vodafone.
If you are using Talk Talk via city fibre, then what you have got is a standard email that no one have looked at. £5.11 is a fair bit to be honest, I thought mine was bad enough, I hope you have not clicked on any links just in case it is not from Talk Talk.,

Yeah i'll need to update that smile

but yeah hopefully its only for openreach connections or may have to move again since im paying only £36 for 900Mbps with talktalk, i don't want to pay over £40 per month.

It doesn't make any difference who supplies the last-mile connection.

The price rise is entirely between you and your provider (e.g. Talktalk). Regardless of what they claim, it is not in the slightest way linked to any wholesale cost rises they suffer: it's simply what you agreed to in the contract. And the Openreach tail is only one part of their cost base anyway.

FWIW, Openreach price rises on regulated products are pegged at a lower rate than the service providers are raising theirs. For example, SoGEA 40/10 is rising from 152.51 pa to 169.44 pa (11.1%). FTTP 40/10 is rising from 173.77 to 193.04 (also 11.1%).

In any case, the big retail service providers are not rising the prices for new customers - only existing ones who are locked into a contract, and therefore have no chance to negotiate or move away. Fingers crossed that Martin Lewis' campaigning can get this changed.

If you've signed a contract, and the contract allowed them to raise prices, then it could be expensive to buy yourself out of it.

Talktalk have it in the terms and conditions that they can (and will) raise your price every year by the rate of inflation (CPI) plus 3.7%
This applies to every customer regardless of when they signed.
So if you are 2 months in to an 18 month contract then you will get this price rise and another next April.

The percentage rise is also based on the full package price and not on any promotional/discounted rate.

If you want to leave you will need to pay Talktalk's early termination fees or they will chase you for the remaining balance, through debt collectors of necessary, affecting your credit.

This isn't unique to Talktalk. Most big providers do the exact same annual price rises of CPI + 3.7%
