SNR issue

[link to this post]

hi

After taking some advice from my last post and reading a lot of other peoples problems on here I moved my router (D-Link 504) to the main socket and unplugged all other extensions & phones.

It now syncs at 6432 kbps (as opposed to the connects of between 4000 & 5500 I had been getting previously)

With this Im getting a steady rate of 350 kb/s from my news server (not sure if thats good/bad but im happy with it)

The FEC errors clock up very quickly (I think quicker than they were previously) and my SNR is still only 3.0db (Actual SNR , not noise margin)

That said ....I have now been connected for an hour & a half and Ive only lost conn once which is great compared to how it was.

Im considering disconnecting my ring wire (would have to be right in the BT main socket , yeah?) ...but is it really worth it. Is this something that has deffinate potential to reduce SNR or is it not that big a deal really?

Im also considering getting a NetgearDG384 as they have supposedly got a great tolerance to poor SNR and will stay connected even if it hits zero. The wired version is only about

I'm afraid that disconnecting the ring wire is one of these "suck it and see" situations, because you won't know how much extra noise the ring wire is picking up until you cut it (at the master socket). My house had a maze of extension wiring which didn't matter until ADSL came along, and because the phone wiring was running close to power and other wiring, it did make a big difference.

However, just recently I invested in a filtered face plate from ADSL Nation, and connected my ADSL modem direct to the faceplate in the bedroom, and ran an ethernet cable back to the router in my room. This is definitely the best way to do it.
