MaxDSL & Training

Hi all,

Hopefully a simple couple of questions for someone to answer.

On Saturday, I went to my parents to set up their modem etc in preparation for MaxDSL (the first time for broadband on their line) which was due to be enabled on their line on Tues 19th. To my surprise, it was already enabled so I guess the 10 day training period starts from Saturday?

Next Tues 26th, they're away, which is day 10 of the training period. Is it recommended to leave the modem connected and on, or will it be ok for them to turn it off for the week?

Any help welcome.

The training period starts from when the ADSL modem is first connected and sync'd to the exchange. The latest advice is that the ADSL modem should be switched on all day and night, and switched off for about half an hour per day. I didn't always do the "switch-off" bit during my training period, and it didn't seem to affect things too much. The more you have the modem connected, the more accurate the line profile will be.

Where did you hear about the half hour switch off per day? I've not heard that before?

It was on a BT Help video.

Only thing I'd add is that if thunder is a possibility, it might be better to power down and disconnect, not only for protection, but because it could force a low-speed re-sync.

The exact wording is

"Please stay switched on as long as possible, but to help the process, you should disconnect your Modem/Router at least once a day during this time for at least 15 minutes. We recommend you do this overnight"

True ! When I wrote the original reply, the link was a dim and distant memory. It took me about 15 minutes to find the link

No worries about the name similarity...just thought it was worthwhile adding the rider to the sig. to avoid any confusion if one of us answered the other, as was inevitable sometime...as proven
