Strange Noise Issue

Today I answered my telephone, and after speaking a few words the circuit was drowned out by an extremely loud hiss. I hung up and on lifting the phone, the same noise was still present.

I switched off my router, a Netgear DG814 and the noise ceased immediately.

Switched the router back on and all was well with the telephone.

I use an ADSL Nation faceplate filter (latest type), I'm on ADSLmax.

Normally there is no noise whatsoever other than a slight mains hum due to my small single line PABX.

Strange.

I would suggest you revert back to a microfilter to test if the faceplate has developed a fault. Remove the faceplate and plug-in a microfilter instead. If the problem stops then the faceplate has probably failed.

Borrow another router, if does not clear the fault, then you *may* have a line fault. Spent most of today clearing something similar. Persuading your ISP you have a problem will take some doing however. Sorry.

The fault cleared as soon as I had recycled the router, phone fine straight away. It was almost as if my dial-up modem had kicked in, but must stress it was not dial-up modem hand shaking sounds that I heard, just the loud woosh/his of data. Plus the fact that it cleared on switching off the router, would seem to eleiminate the dial-up modem. It's the first occurance of this, so a bit puzzled. I've heard adsl sounds when fault finding other installations, and todays noise was different.

The fault has gone. It cleared as soon as I recycled the router (off, wait, on). It's the first time in 2 1/2 years that I had a fault like this on my installation. I didn't/don't hear ADSL sounds (which I have heard fault finding elsewhere) so am puzzled.

Only thing that I can add is that over the last couple years, two people have said that they have left me a message on my answer phone, their calls were shown on my Caller Display at the time thaey said they had called. Only problem - I don't have an answer phone. They described hearing tones etc, so it was not like a 1571 service which is voice prompted. (I do not have 1571 or Call Minder either).

Crossed line as they used to say?

I will just have to keep an eye (ear?) on it and see what transpires............

What do ADSL sounds sound like? I thought nothing used by ADSL was within normal human hearing range.

I made a similar assumption about noise on a voice line but it turned out to be a major problem in the local loop.

If you lift your handset while your modem/router syncs you can hear a sort of "digital" sound in the background.

If you lift your handset and hear those sounds then it means your broadband filter that should be connected to your phone either isn't there or isn't working
