max adsl poor speeds( snr etc )

hey, im with plus.net

i got upgraded to max adsl up to 8mb
my stable 1.1mb got ditched for a fancy
500kb-900kb line -.-

my line attentuation was 40, and snr around 17 at this point

i decided to have a look inside my test socket, and by cutting the ring wire(orange)
my speed increase to 1.3mb (which it has been for 4 days)

SNR decrease to 13-15,
and my line attentuation shot up, to 60 ;/

i just found out that interleaving has been turned on

browsing through sites, people told me i should be getting 2-4mb off my line, i live 2km from exchange (as the crow flies ), around 4km wire lenght

ohh, and my next door neighbour has been increased to a stable 2mb line.

why am i getting such low speeds? and a jump of 20db for line attentuation seems abit steep for a 0.5mb increase doesnt it ?

modem sync speed is ?

If you have a test socket no need for wire cutting the test socket is a clean connection to the incoming line. Sounds like you cut one half of your signal pair

The line attenuation should be a static figure. It does not change with sync speed or whether Max is enabled or not. Cutting the ring wire should also not have an affect.

Attenuation is the gradual loss of signal over the length of a line caused (mainly) by electrical resistance. This can also be adversely affected by poor or corroded contacts in the signal path.

Try connecting your router or modem temporarily to the test socket behind the face plate. This will give you the best attenuation figure your line can achieve as you are bypassing all the extension wiring in your house. If this attenuation figure is still 40db and/or you get a higher sync then the fault lies in your extension wiring.

If the attenuation is worse at the extension than at the master test socket, when you removed the ring wire, you may have dislodged one of the other two signal wires.

If this is the case, and if there is enough free play in the extension wires, try and reconnect just the two signal wires again by pushing them down into the "insulation displacement connectors" again (further down the wires, obviously). You will need a disposable plastic IDC tool for this available for about

very first thing i did, was remove socket, then attempt with test socket,
where my attention went upto 60, snr 15 then speed up to 1.3mb

i then replaced it back, to master socket, ( as it was) then line attenuation went back down to 40, and my speed sycnhed from anything frm 0.6-0.9mb again

then put back into test socket again, etc

so it seemed that my line attenuation was better in extension :S

this is confusing me :]

Check again at the master socket. If it still goes up to 60dB, raise a fault with BT via your ISP. You could have faulty wiring at the socket, or a faulty socket.
