DACS - Demon internet

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have a DACS phone line and am sitting nervously having just applied to Demon Internet for their broadband service.

Has anybody any experience of the dreaded DACS lines and know if Demon are ok with them (or any other ISPs?).

I called BT when i found out it was a DACS line and they said most ISPs will not pay the charge to remove it, but BT would waive the cost if i signed up with them. Bit sneaky though isn't it?

All help appreciated.

The truth is that no ISP pays BT to remove DACS. Its done transparently when BT Wholesale receive the order from ANY ISP.

Below is a snipet from the following site
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/oftel/consumer/advice/faqs/btfaq5.htm

The Guidelines say that, where a line is fitted with a device like DACS, Oftel considers that the line is unlikely to achieve optimum performance. Therefore, where an end-user complains about slow speeds and it turns out that the line is fitted with DACS, the provider (BT/Kingston) should take all reasonable steps to provide a line without DACS, eg by removing the DACS device, or providing an unused line which isn't fitted with DACS.

The reference only relates to the provision of basic narrow band services i.e.dial-up

ISDN and Broadband are not considered basic services

In reality the likelyhood is that BT will remove the DACS unit for broadband as well; but they are not obliged by Ofcom to do so.

DACS on a line will have the effect of completely blocking ADSL. As the previous poster says, the info on that page refers to analogue modems only. DACS will be removed by BT Wholesale as part of the order process, although it can delay things by a day or two.

Cheers
