Extension Wiring - Cat5e cable

[link to this post]

Hi
I'm going to fit a new extension and wire it from the master socket.
Now which cat5e cable should I use, twisted, patch etc or does it matter, I'm just a bit confused by the different cat5 cables.
At the moment I have a cat5 twisted cable, thats just plugged into the master socket/router, would it be alright just to wire this one in, or do I need another one and please feel free to recommend one.

Thanks

All CAT5 cable is "twisted" - you'll sometimes see it listed as UTP, which means "unshielded twisted pair", or occasionally as STP ("shielded" blah). Each of the 4 pairs of wires are twisted together to mitigate against external interference.

Generally, the correct choice is standard UTP cable - but there are two kinds, and the difference is in the kind of wire itself.

Patch cable is made using *stranded* copper - many very thin threads making up each line. This is to promote flexability, at the expense of long-term reliability (no matter, 'cos it's easy to change) and poorer long-distance transmission characteristics.

The cable used for long, permanent runs - for example, your intended use - has solid cores. This is more inflexible cable - which doesn't matter, because it doesn't get moved around - but it has far better long-distance transmission characteristics.

In addition, solid-core is cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to buy.

Also, I've written on this topic at great length elsewhere on the site - do a search.
