Speed Problems - Any suggestions

[link to this post]

Hi,
I have a router sync speed of 5600kbps (syncing at this rate for 5 days +)
a wireless connection of 54mpbs
a throughput speed of 3500kbps
My router stats are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5600 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 34 db 9.5 db
Noise Margin 15 db 25 db
my router is plugged directly into the master socket and there are no other devices plugged into that socket. I have turned off all software firewalls and virus scanning software ( while turned on, the speed was down at 1000kbps )
I'm supposed to be on ADSL Max which seems to be the case with the correct upload speed.

Is there anything else i can check/do?

any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You may have three problems: -
1. ISP or BT congestion/contention which is limiting your speed to below the 5Mbps profile you should be on.
What IP profile does the BT speedtester say you're on?

2. You have quite a low sync speed, for your 36db line attenuation (possibly causeb by your 15db noise margin).
Does your router resync at the same margin, or has it built up to that level (maybe because it last sync'd during hours of darkness, and most interference)?

3. If your router resyncs at a margin of 15db, your sync speed will be limited (I'd expect you to be closer to the 'magic' 8128kbps, with such a low attenuation).
There are two ways of tackling this; Contact your ISP and wait, whilst slowly pulling your hair out. Buy a router with a Broadcom chipset (such as the Speedtouch 5x6 series, the Belkin 7633 or the Netgear DG834GT), and tweak the margin down yourself. You'll only be able to go down to about 10db, but that may be enough to get you an extra 1.5Mbps.

You say you're plugged into the master socket, are there still extensions that are wired into the back of the socket, and did you try the internal test socket?

Thanks for the response

in answer

1 - IP Profile does say i'm limited to 3500kbps - how can i get this raised?
2 - I'm sorry, i've got no idea. All i know is that it's remained at the same sync speed for the last five or six days.
3 - I did have the Netgear DG834GT as i'm on sky broadband. However, even with the tweaks to the margin, it only sync'd at 5200kbps, so i'm better off on my trusted DG834Gv2.
4 - The house is fairly old and doesn't have the inside test socket. There is only one other socket in the house that is connected to the main and used. This has a microfilter on it.

is there any software ways to check i'm getting the best from my end of the connection?

You mention you're on Sky Broadband.
It this their 'Sky Connect' package (upto 8Mbps speed, 40GB a month download allowance, and

Hi

Many many thanks, i now know i can get some decent speed.

Thanks for the reply. I have just managed to find the master socket, didn't even know it was there, ( while i was checking the electric meter, there it was!! ). I have now plugged into that and can sync from there at 7328 ( from there it's only a matter of waiting three days for the Bras to catch up... )

My mains socket doesn't have an open socket on it, just a face plate with the test socket underneath. Short of using an open soket all the time, what can i do to solve the problem?

cheers

An ADSL face-plate/splitter/filter from Austin Taylor, ADSLNation, Solwise, or ClarityIT would fit the bill, that will fit in place of the existing face-plate, and filters the ADSL signal out at the master socket (meaning the extension wiring will have less effect on the sync).
This is provided the existing face plate is not blank for a reason (some T&Cs of the metering or alarm system you may have).

is it easy to fit?

the wires underneath look pretty muddled. Is there a guide anywhere on the net/adslguide?

clarity.it explains the wiring, you only get involved with the wires that are currently on the back of the blank faceplate moving to the back of the filtered faceplate.
