ADSL2+ and Exchange capping vs Router Capping

[link to this post]

Hi,

I am not sure of the difference between getting my sync capped at the exchanged vs capping the SNR at my end using the Router.

If I get my ISP to 'uncap' my limit at the exchange (I'm on ADSL2+) will my modem sync at its highest rate? depending on the SNR I tell it too? I have the Belkin 7633.

The reason I ask is because after a hicup at the exchange, when I came back online my profile had been wiped so I was syncing at 128kbs. I rang support and told them I use to sybc at 13000 and I think they have capped my service too that. My SNR is 5 at this speed and durig the evening time it would drop and I would just sync at a lower speed. But now my router always trys and sync at this level at the loss of line stability.

The acid test I did was to set my SNR on the router to 10 and before it would sync at about 10000, but now it doesn't sync at all.

Does that sound like normal behaviour for an ISP capped line?

Thanks in advance

with the router you can only bend the target SNR set by the exchange, what speed does it connect at now if you turn all your fiddling off ?

It connects at 13000 (just under to be precise) with an SNR of 5ish

But the SNR varies a lot throught the day... its about 5 at 13000 during the evening but could go as high as 10 during the day at 13000

So before it was capped, it would connect over 13000 during the day, but when it losed sync at that connection speed in the evening, it would reduce the connection speed but keep the SNR higher.

Is it possible to get the ISP to cap on SNR rather than data rate. My line is pretty stable at 10 SNR with very few disconnects if any... at 5 SNR is disconnects frequently...

Regards

Depends who the ISP is. Be and Bulldong both will cap on an SNR as will UKOL.

TBH they don't ususally cap a speed, but put you on an SNR template.

Its Sky (Easynet)

So for example if they put me on an SNR profile of say 10 and I synced at 10000. If I configured my router to connect with an SNR of say 5, would my sync speed go up? Or would the DSLAM disconnect me and try and re-sync me at 10 SNR?

Thanks

Well that is Easynet stuff. In EN corporate environment if you have a set SNR cap on the DSLAM you can't use the EU CPE to request a different rate, you just get booted. Whether this holds true for UKOL/Sky stuff I have yet to discover, but seeing as its the same exchange kit, I would guess so.
