Is the noise on my line too high?

[link to this post]

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 3776 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 15.3 dB 19.0 dB

Could this be slowing down my speed?

Please let me know if you need more detals

The noise margin, at 15db, is higher than normal (default starts off at 6db).
The target is often raised by BT in response to noisy line conditions, which cause repeated re-syncs of your modem/router. However, it can also be triggered by temporary problems, such as dodgy routers and thunderstorms.
The high noise margin will be forcing your router to synchronise at a lower speed, but without knowing your line attenuation it's difficult to estimate what speed you would get with a margin of 6db, but it's fair to assume an extra 2Mbps may be possible (if, of course, your router is able to hold sync at a margin of 6db, and the target wasn't increased to 15db for a reason).
What is your line attenuation, and how/where do you have your router connected (master or slave socket, micro-filter or ADSL filtered face-plate, router local to master socket or on an extension cable)?
Does your noise margin fluctuate by much?

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
....... ..... .....Downstream Upstream
Line Attenuation 52.0 dB... 27.0 dB
Router is connected to a slave socket with a micro filter.
No the noise margin doesnt fluctuate by much.

Please let me know if you need any more info.

Do you think I should be telephoning BT and getting them to come out and look at my line.
The line has passed the line fault test carried out over the phone.
Thanks

Have you checked all your internal wiring?

Re:- "Do you think I should be telephoning BT.....

Not yet.

Have you checked all of your internal wiring (see numerous topics here) and tried your router plugged directly into the master socket with all phones disconnected?

Hi,
Thanks for reply.

I have tried removing all phones, and plugged directly into the master socket with all phones disconnected,
I still got the same speed and same line noise levels.
But I'm not sure about checking the wiring of each phone socket.

If you have an NTE5 master socket, the type with the detachable lower half, remove the front panel and plug into the test socket behind the master socket. This will, at a stroke, eliminate your internal wiring completely and save you having to check each socket (unless, of course, you get much better results in the test socket).

If you do find better results this way, the first thing to do is disconnect the ring wire at the master, it's usually coloured orange/white but is always on terminal 3.

Hi,
Thanks for reply,
I did take off the detachable lower half of my master socket, but I still got ther same speed and line noise.

Well, in that case, you should have eliminated the inetrnal wiring as that is disconnected by using the test socket. If you have removed the ring wire, which can act as a large antenna, picking up all sorts of noise, and is not generally needed with modern phones, you have done as much as you can.

I would suggest you phone your ISP and get them to have BT take a look at your situation.

Seeing as you've exhausted all internal checks, ask your ISP to get your "TARGET SNR SET TO 8dB". Alot of people will give you different ideas about what is the best SNR, but I've found that 8dB appears to be the most stable.

Got any questions about how to get BT to fix your MAX line? Ask me!

I think the BT 'standard' is 6db then 3db increments from there, ie it would have to be 9db.
