Interleaving advice

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I've been reading about interleaving and since I play a lot of online games I have asked BT to turn the interleaving off to help the ping and reduce the lag.

The router manager has always shown' interleaving latency type' since upgrading to max adsl in Aprill, as i'm roughly 2.45 kilometres and have a poor signal quality I pressume it would have been turned on by default.

When I phoned BT this afternoon they said it was turned off, but I don't have much faith in the BT support.

Should the BT voyager 2091 router manager be displaying something else, rather than the 'latency type Interleave' if it really was turned off ?

How should I check my ping, and i'm roundabout 2.45 kilometres from the exchange,so what ping times should I be getting

Is there any other tools I can use to check to see if the interleaving is turned off.

Cheer's.

It should show "FAST". You may need to re-start the router to get rid of interleaving.

Thanks for the reply zebedeee.

From what i've read about interleaving I thought it should show 'fast' in the latency if indeed the interleave is turned off. I've rebooted the router and it still shows interleave.

Why the heck are BT saying it is turned off when it's not.As I said in the first post I pressume it's been turned on by default because of the distance i'm away from the exchange and the poor signal line.

I'm not getting anywhere with BT on this.....

You can't assume that it is on, it depends on what is actually happening on the line.

Where confusion can arise is that BT state that it is off and could be correct, but later it is turned on. There are three settings: On (rare), Off (FAST) and Auto, the default. With Auto, interleaving is left off unless the line conditions require it to be on. THat should give the best balance between speed, latency and performance but may not suit if you need a lower latency. To achieve that you can opt for interleaving off (Fast) and accept the poorer performance that will probably result.

Thanks for the reply junderwood.

I'm even more confused now ^_^

So, the router is stating interleave in the latency type but the interleave could be off.

Is there's a difference with the latency between interleave off and fast latency type.

If so I should phone Bt and ask for the fast latency type ?
