Slow downloads

[link to this post]

Hey,

Today ive had broadband activated by UKFSN. I'm on the 30gb, 300gb max tarriff and can get a connection up to 6Mb.

Just done a speed check on here and it says
Downstream 4,073.3 Kbps
Upstream 378.4 Kbps

while my router stats show
Connection Speed: Downstream 5280 kbps, Upstream 448 kbps
Line Attenuation: Downstream 34 db, Upstream 9 db
Noise Margin: Downstream 0 db, Upstream 25 db

Dont really know what the line attenuation or noise margin mean, but ive been downloading at around only 100kbps.

Could anyone shed some light on why it is so low?

Have a Netgear DG834G router by the way.

Cheers,
James

You can't have been...

If your download speeds haven't been that great then its likely to be down to exchange congestion.

You have no noise margin, meaning your line is likely to drop its connection.

Have you tried plugging your router into the test socket behind the lower plate of your master socket?
With an attenuation of 34db, you should be synching at 8128kbps, not 5820kbps.
Meaning your line must be quite noisy, or your extension wiring isn't up to scratch.

Just plugged microfilter into test socket and still getting poor download speeds.

Straight after downloading done another speed test...

Downstream 3,090.9 Kbps
Upstream 359.0 Kbps

Just done a congestion test on usertools.plus.net and the result was red meaning there is a problem.
But then did a test on nildram and that came back saying everything is fine..

Any ideas?
Cheers

if the speedtest is way higher than the download either the download is traffic managed or the source site is overloaded.
