An Ulterior Motive From my ISP?

[link to this post]

Just had a letter from ECLIPSE about "important changes to the way we provide your broadband service"

Apparently my broadband is delivered by BT Ipstream but they want my permission to be transferred onto "local loop unbundling LLU">

they are harping on about Key Benefits, but i don't trust this lot so wondered if someone could unravel what the downsides to this would be and even why they are bothering to ask my permission? (which is what raises my suspision)

i am currently paying

migrating to another ISP from LLU may prove to be a challenge and require a cease and reprovide.

HI there
So as Eclipse (owned by Kingston Communications who are a great company in my opinon. - not). move me to this service then I will not be able to move to another service with a mac code?
is that the case?

they list benefits being 1) increased speed 2) improved connectability etc.

but they don't list the negatives and I knew you guys would have a better idea of this change! (it sounds they are locking me in?)

Sorry, my knowledge is minimal

not all ISPs take LLU MAC codes, and LLU to other LLU migration is even worse. It doesn't lock you in but may restrict your choice.

Thanks Phil for your advice.....

It makes sense reading that little nugget to "opt out" as I can do then (which is the purpose of the letter

You must work for an ISP being able to decipher that one! do you know any good uncapped ISP's at the minute? money no object in terms of monthly subs.....

Thanks so much - again, its appreciated......

I found this, welcome your opinions:

Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) FAQ

Important information about changes to the way we provide your broadband service.

The UK Internet Market is catching up with Eclipse

The LLU rollout programme is being regulated by Ofcom, the communications regulator, and is bringing the UK in line with other European countries where LLU is already delivering better-value services to businesses and consumers. Ofcom believes that the development of LLU is vital to ensure a more competitive and innovative telecommunications market for the future. Approximately 650,000 customers in the UK are already enjoying the benefits of LLU, including customers of AOL, Bulldog Communications Ltd, Cable & Wireless, BSkyB-Easynet, Energis, NTL-Telewest, Tiscali and Wanadoo UK plc.

From early 2008, BT will also be deploying a new 21st Century Network, known as 21CN. 21CN is BT

largely true. Not giving out LLU MACs at all is the worst case outcome.

I was moved onto LLU by Eclipse a few months ago. At that time they the letter did not mention LLU it just said there was going to be some engineering work at the exchange. There was also no opt-out. I think Eclipse changed their policy due to customer complaints.

For me the change over went smoothly and the new connection was reliable. I still get speed issues though.

On the positive side there is no BRAS profile and associated issues on the LLU service.

On the negative side migrating away was not possible until recently. People are starting to post that they have received LLU MACs but as yet I haven't heard of a migration that has gone through. You also will be by the number of ISPs that accept LLU MACs.

Following your request to obtain your MAC Code, we have passed this request over to our Migration Team who will be in contact to discuss this further.

Please contact us if you require any further assistance. Many thanks.

so hopefully we will soon see if they give us a mac
and how much good it does us.
i really dont want to be without internet for weeks while bt disconnect us and re-enable us.
As for uncapped isps Be is who i want to be with but have to wait until january2007 before they do our exchange.
until then Vivaciti seems to be the best option for us, they are not uncapped but have a realistic set of services like 60gb peak/330gb offpeak download limits for about the same price as eclipse.
i dont know how good they really are but they both seem to be the top options to me

HI Maul
Nice to hear from you!
Thanks for your replies

Sorry to hear of your Eclipse experience, I don't think Eclipse are Honest about their customers and what they do with downloads

I note they no longer offer UNCAPPED services, so sure I am being penalised as a result. I don't get the speed with torrents i once did, thats for sire :-)

I would prefer a 2MB download speed than a Capped 8mb download speed any day, as I only take want i want!

I checked the links - Be is not available to me, where i am

but the other one is but there packages are SO confusing!

Anyone any other experience on Vivaciti? Good customer service if a problem etc?
