Slow Bus DSL of only 460kbps - is fax the problem?

[link to this post]

I've got BT Business 8mb DSL but can only get a download speed of 460kbps and upload of 330kbps. There is a fax machine attached to my line with a filter and I'm using a LinkSys router

I've also got a BT Home 8mb DSL in the same house with the same type or router which is returning 2500 kbps download and 370 mbps upload

BT have checked the Business line and given it the all clear while LinkSys have reset the router, installed the latest firmware and said its fine

I'm lost and puzzled as there is obviously a problem but I cant get it sorted. The low speed is on wired and wireless, with and without the fax machine connected and switching the router off between tests

Any ideas please?

Thanks, Stephen

So it can't be the fax machine.

Is this "download speed" to which you refer a speedtest result ? What is the modem sync speed, downstream attenuation and other stuff see link in sig below.

Thanks Phil, but I've been unable to follow the instructions at http://newsnet.googlepages.com/maxdsldiagnostics which ask me to -

Turn debug on:
http://192.168.1.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug (I did this and it said 'Debug Enable!')

start telnet:
telnet 192.168.1.1

type in command:
adslctl info --stats

I'm not familiar with Telnet but got it started and got the following -

Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client

Escape Character is 'CTRL+]'

Microsoft Telnet> telnet 192.168.1.1
Invalid Command. type ?/help for help
Microsoft Telnet>

So instead I went into the router 'status' and got -

Status: Up
Downstream Rate: 4768 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PVC Connection
Encapsulation: RFC 2364 PPPoA
DSL Modulation Mode: G.dmt
Multiplexing: VC
Qos: UBR
Pcr Rate:
Scr Rate:
Autodetect: Disable
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Enable: 1
PVC Status: Up

Does this help at all?

Stephen

"Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client

Escape Character is 'CTRL+]'

Microsoft Telnet> telnet 192.168.1.1
Invalid Command. type ?/help for help
Microsoft Telnet> "

open an MS-DOS Command prompt.

Type "telnet 192.168.1.1" ALL ON THE SAME LINE and then hit enter.

If you get into the "Microsoft Telnet>" prompt again I *think* you can use "open 192.168.1.1"

I think you have confused what you type into DOS to start Telnet with a target device and the commands in Telnet itself. It isn't totally surprising to find that telnet is not a telnet command.

Try opening the Command Prompt window and there type telnet 192.168.1.1, that will run telnet which will ask for the router's password.

Just typing telnet starts the program without opening anything, but you can then use the open command.

Sorry, I only saw the bit about typing telnet when in telnet and getting the error message.

I opened the Command Prompt window and then typed telnet 192.168.1.1

I then get the message -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BusyBox v1.00 (2006.05.04-09:08+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

Thats not what you're looking for is it?

I'm not looking for anything, merely trying to help

I was referring to the version of telnet which is included with Windows for use on a command prompt window. (You can also launch it from the Run command, and it then opens a Command Prompt window). It was that version which had been described in the previous correspondence.

I understand Busybox to be an open source utility which provides cut down versions of most common linux commands in other operating systems. Have you installed it on your computer? If so, it looks as if it has changed things in Windows so that when you try to launch telnet, busybox is launched instead. It could be mildly interested in what happens after you type help - are you already in its telnet client or is that one of the options which comes up. However, I don't think it is relevant to questioner's position.

BusyBox is the embedded linux running the router so you have entered the command line of the small computer that is the router. Type help followed by ENTER and it will give a list of available commands. However it is so long since I have used linux that you will have to wait for someone who know it or the router you are using.for more help.

Have a look to see if your router is here;
