Anyone familiar with BT Wiring?

[link to this post]

Hi guys, my house use to have bt 2 lines, separate numbers

Our original line is this

this has long since been disconnect and no longer gives a dial tone.

this is out current adsl enabled line

Can I unscrew the drop lines from The original box and simply unscrew/snip the wires and remove the nt5e from the windowsill ?

Thanks

the "can I" has two parts - regulatory and practical. The regulatory position is that this is BT's kit and not yours to play with.

Practically, you could take the wires off the right hand (current) socket and pull them back into the left hand one, connecting the orange/white pair in place of the green/black. This leaves the wiring neatly in one box and makes the other one redundant. That's probably what the BT guy you're going to call out will do

Heh

Cant i just unplug the original boxes wires, unscrew it, and the unscrew the new box, move it in to the corner and screw it down?

It would just make my hall much neater with just the one box

the wires to the box you want to keep pass through the other one, hence my suggestion of pulling them back.

My way only requires you to unscrew one box and remove it rather than removing one and moving the other.

It looks like the number of phone sockets isn't the only aesthetic issue

:P

How easy is it to screw those wires back up? Is there a hole for them to go in like with speekers or what?

the wires are under the screws, its easy enough. You have to do it either way to get the wires out of the box that gets removed.

It's always worth restripping the pair and folding it double before reterminating. Looking at the photo's I'd suggest that you have a real close look, and check for any visible corrosion, (use the NTE with least showing.)
