New MAX Connection - Low Speeds: What can I expect

I have switched to NewNet 8MB Home S Service and the connection was activated yesterday. I am keen to ensure my connection is the best it can be. The current figures are as follows:

Attenuation 23DB

Margin Downstream: 12

Margin Upstream: 27

Sync Speed 7.7 Meg - I think - is sync speed the speed my connection reports that it connects at?

Speedtest: 1893.32 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )

235KBPS Transfer Rate on test downloads.

I am based 600 metres from the exchange as the crow flies.

I am concerned that my speed is low, and that my internal extension cabling is not up to much higher speeds. The current speed is equivalent to a good 2 meg connection.

Based on the figures above, has anyone got an idea of what I should be aiming for in terms of speed? Any ideas how to improve my stats?

Read the bit about Data Rates (Bras Profile), it may be stuck at 2Mbits but you will probably have to wait until the initial 10 days are up before your ISP can do anything about it

Right - I am now through the 10 day training period and my line has not changed at all - my speedtest is consistent at just under 2MBs which is obviously pretty bad for an 8meg connection.

In real world terms my download speeds are around 235 KBPS with a large file.

I am going to contact my ISP but I am slightly concerned because of the internal cabling we have inherited from our previous homeowner, who had the interesting idea of hardwiring the internal extension cabling directly into the BT Master Socket. Could that also be causing the slow speeds?

If BT come out and see this are they likely to charge me to change it?

There is no need for BT to come out if your line rate and noise margin are fairly stable. If your still syncing at 7mbits + then you should be achieving speeds well in excess of what you are receiiving.
Try the BT speedtest and if its working it will tell you the line rate and IP profile.

Ok - have done this and my line rate (is this synch speed?) is 7616KBPS. My IP Profile however is 2000KBPS. My actual transfer rate is 1853KBPS, which would be good for a 2 Meg connection, but is no good for an 8Meg MAX connection.

As I am now out of my 10 day line training period, how do I get the IP Profile raised, and any ideas why the profile is still stuck at 2Meg?

Sometime the profile sets to 2Mbits as default but dosnt change for some reason. You should 1st try your ISP and ask them to contact BT about a stuck IP profile
