Simple Filter Question

Just wiring up my old mans place after he finally decided to get BB!! The phone set up is a bit of a pain. Am i correct in saying the the router/modem can connect direct to the BT master socket (not through a splitter) providing the phones behind it are connected through a filter? Or does the modem have to go through a filter as well?

Unless you have a special filtered master socket fitted by BT..if he's got 1 he'll know about it!

Despite what others have said, the router or modem does not need to go through a filter. The reaason for the filter is to keep ADSL signal out of phones. Usually, however it is convenient to go through a filter, because the filter serves as an adapter between the BT phone socket and the rj11 connecter used by ADSL.

If he's using a phone on the master then yes, other wise no.

Even if he's using a phone through the master then he doesn't need to connect the modem/router through the filter, although obviously in this case it's probably more convenient given that most filters also provide a socket for a modem.

The need for a filter on the modem is a common myth happily promoted by the manufacturers and retailers to sell more filters...

You're fine connecting the modem directly. Just make sure you get the correct type of RJ-11 to BT cable as some patch the wrong pair of wires.

The ADSL output on filters doesn't go through any filtering (it's wired straight through), so you don't need a filter. If you do fit one, it's unlikely to make any difference, as long as you connect the modem/router to the ADSL output.
