line stats query

[link to this post]

I'm currently on aol max using a Netgear DG834g

below are my line stats

connection 8128 448

Line Attenuation 27db 9db

noise margin 12-16db 22db

i am due to be connected to sky broadband adsl2 on wed 28.
i received my new Netgear DG834GT today ive
checked to see if ive been connected early but i havent. but i did notice
that my line stats are different when using the 834GT

connection 8128 448

Line Attenuation 28db 19db

noise margin 16.4db 24db

i noticed my line att upstream is 10db less using the 834g
i assume this is a router problem giving the wrong readings ?

ive also noticed that the noise margin fluctuates from 12- 16
is this normal ? and finally using which ever stats are correct what speed do people think i will get on sky adsl 2 ??

hope somebody can clarify this

thanks

Likely the latter.

Not excessive, 14 +/- 2 dB.

Should be over 10M as there's plenty of margin left at 8M.

The upstream attenuation is calculated by the DSLAM - it has to measure how much signal it receives and then compare this with the upstream power as advised by your router. Perhaps one of the routers is misreporting the upstream power. Difficult to say really.

It rather depends on what noise margin you're put on, but I would say ypu should be expecting 12-14Mbps on say 10dB margin, higher with a lower margin.

i'm sure i was told that some netgears do give false readings and its a known problem hence my suggestion but im not so sure now.

the noise margin is upstream minus downstream or is it just the downstream noise margin

will the above stats change once im connected to adsl 2?

I'm just referring to the downstream noise margin. Your upstream speed will probably be the full advertised rate (not sure what this is for Sky - 768k perhaps?).
