help, i dont know if anyone would be kind enough to have a look at my problem and maybe have an idea how to solve it.
i bought a 3com router for my home pc. i contacted my isp, pipex for any settingts for connecting .
as instructed i connected the router, succesfully mananged to connect to the 3com setup pages, i could see all the correct green lights illuminated, and a connected status of 100 mpbs..this was it i thought !!
sadly not , whilst the data was inputted and saved, i was unable to connect to a web site via my browser, i kept getting the same error.
so i rebooted and reset the connections, each time i get as far as saving the settings with 3com..but never to open a web page..any thoughts would be really welcome.
12 hours down the drain and a lot of frustration as the 3com help desk wasnt available at the weekend

1] And the error was? [Gi'us a clue, Go on go on go on]

2] So is this wired or wireless?
3] What did you reboot? Router or PC?
If you can get to the web interface on the router, you are nearly there. 4] Does the router save your settings? 5] Does the router think it has connected to your ISP?

thanks for the interest shown, sincerely.
ok sorry for the lack of clarity
in response to the queries
1. error message was server not found
2. i hard wire connected an ethernet cable in advance ha ha ha of setting up the wireless connection.
3. the 3com user guide suggests rebooting the router if you cannot connect successfully.
i gave up after 12 hours of rebooting and failing.
like you i think i MUST be really close as i CAN get as far as the saving of the input data.
i did try switching off my norton firewall and internet security tio see if this helped - it didnt.
again please accept my thanks for the interest shown

Thanks for your answers, I am still interested in question 5] Does your router think it is connected to your ISP.
This is an important 'Do not pass go' question. If it doesn't, then it must be fixed, if it does, then other things need investigating.

the honest answer is i guess that i wasnt connected to my isp's server (xtreme pipex)
the basis of the guess is that after i had saved the settings in the 3com online set-up , i then tried both mozilla and i.explorer to access the web without success.
both were tried without firewalls - unsuccessfully , thanks again for yoiur patience all help gratefully received.

I found the 3Com is one of the easiest routers to configure with the help of the quality browser based firmware/software.
I would think you do not have the correct settings saved within your router to connect to your ISP.
(When you save the settings give it time due to the heavy graphical firmware/software within the router)
Your settings should look something like this:
We are pleased to tell you that your line has now been activated and your Broadband service is ready to go, your connection details are displayed below for your convenience.

nice reply and thanks to you as well as the other kind soul.
i did wait for the settings to be saved and got the 100% complete status , but strikingly NOT the we are pleased to tell you script.
as far as the correct settings goes there wasnt too much to configure.
the xtreme passsword and login i have.
pipex said to use PPPOA, VPI/VCI / 038
i cant remember any other settings i had to configure, as i had selected automatic configuration as per the user guide from 3com..again thanks for the continued interest.

The 'we are pleased...' probably comes from an isp intro email to e7er.
Now, you are browsing to your router with a Web Browser, aren't you? You're not using a setup utility? What URL are you using to get ono to the router?
Somwhere in the router's config, I would expect you should find a log of connections and other events. That should tell you whether or not you are connecting. At the moment, do not infer whether you are connecting by whether or not you can access the internet. It is perfectly possible for your router to connect, but your pc not to. So if you jump to conclusions now, and you get it wrong, you are going to give yourself grief by trying to track down a non-existant problem in the wrong piece of kit

i opened my mozilla browser - no internet connection apparent, and typed in the following url http://192.168.1.1 as instructed in the user manual
this allowed me to complete the on screen prompts to enable the router set up.

OK, somewhere from the page that shows up, you ought to be able to find either a status page, which tells you if you are logged on, or a log page, which shows when you did. If you can't finf it by browsing the router, perhaps the manual will point you in the right direction
