It's caused by the action of sunlight breaking down a layer in the upper atmosphere which enables medium (and some long-wave) radio signals to "bounce", rather than shoot off into space. If you use a MW radio at night, you'll notice that reception of local stations can be marred by the reception of stations much further away - this is due to the "bouncing" of the radio signals by this layer. Unfortunately ADSL uses the same frequencies as MW radio, and the unshielded wiring acts like a radio aerial.
When the layer has been broken down by the action of the Sun's rays, it quickly reforms when the Sun goes down. Of course, the good news is that with summer time approaching, the Sun goes down a bit later every night, and rises earlier.
