Possible ADSL extension - Noise

[link to this post]

hi i recently spoke to a number of support staff about my frequent
disconnections. we later found out it was most probably due to my Noise
margin Downstream- which was around 5.3. I was advised to test in on the
master socket after unscrewing it. i did this and i was happy to see that
i now had a much more reasonably Downstream noise margin of 12 and
upwards. However with one problem solved another has started. I can
successfully connect to the router wireless, connected to the master
socket, but it regularly gives me "The limited or no connectivity" message
meaning online gaming is practically worse than when the router was
upstairs on an extension- even with 5.3 noise margin. it has always done this.
I am asking for advice on whether i should purchase a BT ADSL NTE5 Master
Adapter (i read this on a support forum) and then have an ADSL extension
put into the room upstairs. I'm not sure how much this will cost or how it
is done but will it mean that the Noise margin reading i get from the
Master socket will be present after an ADSL extension upstairs so i can connect to my router wired?
Thank you and if there are any other tips you have to lower the Noise
Margin please include them as this problem is making my Internet
connection virtually useless and Online gaming which my son is very fond
off completely impossible.
btw my line stats are:

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 8128 Kbps 448 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 10176 Kbps 1148 Kbps
Noise Margin 12.6 dB 25.0 dB
Line Attenuation 16.5 dB 17.0 dB
Output Power 11.9 dBm 19.8 dBm

(on master socket)
I am on 8mb max and with fast or "gofast"

Thanks, Jonny

There would appear to be a problem with the internal wiring in your property and an NTE5 ADSL faceplate would provide the optimum solution.
You would then need to run a dedicated extension to the location you would want the router.

A quick alternative test would be to open up your BT master (lower section) and extension sockets and remove the wire connected to terminal 3 (this is the ring wire and it can cause an imbalance in the wiring hence the low readings, however the phones will still ring due to the microfilters having the necessary bits inside to make the phones ring).

As for the wireless, have you tried changing the channel as you could have a neighbour running wireless on the same channel.

Edit for spelling

Dave

ok well i think im going to try the new NTE5 face plate. ive heard a lot about this one- http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php the xte2005 - is that the faceplate i should get or should i contact BT. Finally is the extension into my room upstairs likely to be exspensive to get done- the distance is around 15m and it will probably have to run outside then back in through my wall

Thanks dave,
Jonny

If you wire from the xte2005, you don't need BT to do it. Don't jump and fix too much at onec, get the xte2005 in place and if you do find you still have problems, at least it should only be on the wireless side, rather than on the ADSL side as well. At that stage, it's time to tinker with the wireless, changing channels and aerialorientation etc. If that doesn't do the trick, then it's time to think about the extension

The XTE-2005 faceplate is easy to fit. Just remove the existing plate, and replace it with the XTE-2005. If you have phone extensions, you can wire them to the IDC connector on the back of the plate. You will need an IDC connector tool - you can get cheap plastic ones for about

>> I would advise against running an extension for the router, even with a faceplate filter - it's far better to site the router next to the filtered faceplate, and run Cat5 ethernet back to the PC's. <<

I've seen this said several times. Interestingly however, I run a 12m extension from the faceplate downstairs in the hall to my router in the study upstairs, then have two cat5 cables running to the PC's (one next to the router - the other in another bedroom).

I've kept a log of speeds at different times of the day. then moved the PC and router downstairs and plugged it into the socket there and --- no noticeable difference whatsoever!! Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones, but honestly it gives me no problem at all and is far tidier than having several cat 5 cables running up the stair skirting (must keep the better half happy).

I get the same. My extension performs the same as the master. Doesn't a computer give shed loadsa noise off anyway?

Just to clarify, do you mean that your router is currently running permanently off the master test socket (face plate removed)? In that case presumably you don't use any extension cabling at all as it's not actually connected with the face plate removed?

If so, then a filtered face plate is a waste of time, as it's only filtering the non-ADSL extension wiring and will have no effect on an ADSL extension. All you need to do is ensure that the ADSL extension is introducing as little noise as possible and disconnect any other extension cabling at the master. To minimise noise pickup on the ADSL extension, only connect two wires at the master end, and ensure that the extension cabling doesn't run near (and certainly not parallel to) any electrical cabling or equipment.

a twisted pair unfiltered dedicated ADSL extension with no ring wire works fine in many cases.

hi thankyou for your posts, However i'm far from an expert on this so i would have to have a professional wire it. is this right:

My Belkin Router would be downstairs say on a table and connected to the master socket with a XTE2005 faceplate. Then when the Cat5 extension was put in would i take a Rj45 cable and plug one end onto the back of the router and the other end into a socket for the new ethernet extension. finally that ethernet extension would go round the side of my house and through the wall into my room upstiars. then another rj45/ethernet cable would plug into this new socket and lastly into the back of my pc's ethernet port?
IS that right? if it is then thats good otherwise where have i gone wrong
