Line SNR drops on lifting phone

Hi,

I have been experiencing ittermittant problems with my ADSL line over about a year.
The problem comes and goes possibly linked to rain.
The SNR goes up and down by more than 24dB and the router will drops out quite a lot and reconnects at varing speeds between 600KBits and 6MBits. I do live 4.5Km from the exchange and have an attentaution figure of 45dB.

In the house I have a BT master socket ADSL filter with the house extension wiring running off that and the router connected directly to the master sockets ADSL filter. I have tried changing the ADSL filter and router in the past.

When the line is bad, if I pick up the telephone I can hear noise on the line and my ADSL SNR drops by about 11dB. Is it normal to see the ADSL SNR drop by this amount on lifting
the telephone receiver ?

sounds like a line fault - a partial disconnection where the electrical properties are influenced by the extra current flowing when you lift the handset. If it is audible report as a voice fault to BT 151 or your line rental provider.

Yes, I think it is a line fault too. I have tried, over serveral years to get BT and the ISP to fix it, bus as it is ittermitant whenever they start looking at it the fault goes away ... I suspect a bad connection that semi-welds after repeated telephone receiver lifting ..

Is there a way BT can run an extended line test and is there a special BT term for this ?

the remote line tester may not pick it up, you just have to insist on an engineer coming out to witness it for themselves. I believe they carry kit that will detect where the problem is ie how far down the line.

We had a similar problem many years ago.
Every time they tested the line it was OK.
Eventually they found the fault to be the cable from the house to the junction box in the ground outside my house, a mere 12 feet away; they installed a new piece of cable and the problem disappeared.
Intermittent faults can be a real booger to find, they never, ever happen when you are searching for them.

There are two possibilities here - a faulty line as has been discussed but if the noise you hear is coming from your router/dslam then it's a duff filter.

Next time you hear this noise unplug the router - the dslam should drop the adsl signal within 20 or 30 seconds so if unplugging the router causes the noise to stop after a short time then the problem is most probably the filter.
