Bizaar house wiring

Hi just a quick query.

Recently I have been having speed issues. Unstable connections, line throughput being dropped as low as 135kbps, etc. I used to get 4.5mb when first activated to maxAdsl.

I started to look at the internal wiring before escalating to my ISP. The wiring appears to be a complete mess.

The line comes to the house under the eaves and through the wall into the master bedroom. There is then an old junction box that looks similar to the one below. Which I borrowed from a previous thread.

On mine the wiring on the right goes to an old LJ2-1A master socket and where the wiring comes in on the left, it also goes back out! Back out through the wall, along the wall outside the house, back in through the wall into the garage along what used to be the external wall, before coming back through the wall to another LJ2-1A master socket under the stairs.

An extension is wired out of the back of this master socket, up the stairs, into a back bedroom where the router is connected. Both LJ2-1A sockets are BT ones but very messy inside with the wiring!

I assume that this is all very non standard as there are 2 master sockets and the downstairs socket has been moved several times by builders etc (although a BT engineer did fix it about 7 years ago afterwards). I also assume that I could be getting a lot of noise and degradation from this set up.

Would it be wise to get BT to fit a proper NTE5 master socket at the point of entry in the master bedroom and rip out all the other mess myself? I could then install quality filtered extension sockets downstairs and an unfiltered extension using twisted pair to the rear bedroom for the router.

Would BT charge for installing the NTE5 master socket, baring in mind this mess was created by a previous occupant and I have lived in this house for over 20 years?

The sockets you posted then were certainly less than 20 years old

I would just disconnect the burglar alarm wire and reterminate the remaining sockets with the proper tool and see what happens.

I 'borrowed' the picture from an earlier thread to show the style of junction box. My Junction box has 2 grey wires going out on the left.

Given that it has been working fine for 20 years then I would not expect BT to change the master at no charge. If you want it changing then be prepared to pay for it and you can then do all of the wiring yourself.

To follow up. I called BT and they said that there responsibility ends at the old style junction box. beyond that I can do what I like.

I explicitly asked if I could replace one old style master sockets with 1 NTE5 master and rip out the other master socket and he said yes!!!

I'll be flexing the plastic and rewiring the house soon..
