Profile drop on Virgin ADSL max

[link to this post]

Returned after an hour yesterday of not using the internet and found that the modem (ST330 USB) had been trying to reconnect. Managed to connect OK and no problem last night.

I normally have a solid connection with no drop outs (last one about 18 months ago).
Yesterday is unlikely to be a fault my end, more likely to be engineers working on the lines (they do that around here almost every day, but never disconnected me before).

My IP profile is normally 6500 and I get up to that figure off peak.
This morning my profile has dropped to 3500 and getting around that speed.

Obviously it will take a few days to get ramped up to the 6500 again and assume it was the drop outs yesterday that caused the problem.

Question: is it better to leave the connection up all day, or disconnect and reconnect a few times during the day?

Which will get my profile up quicker, or will it make no difference?

Stats all look the same, so no problem with noise, etc.

As it's a USB modem it gets disconnected when the computer is switched off, which never causes any IP profile problems.

Thanks,

Mike.

If you re-sync at the same rate switching on and off will make no difference. It's not the number of syncs you have done since a bad sync it's the number of days.

If you think you might lose sync and automatically re-sync at a lower rate it's probably better to switch off. Only switch back on when you're confident of a good re-sync.

Given that you have no apparent control of the timing of the problems I'd just leave it switched on.

Thanks John,

I will have to just wait and see if it recovers then, just hope it doesn't get stuck.

The sync is the same as before, just the profile that has dropped, and no further problems connecting.

Pity I didn't catch it happening, probably lost connection quite a few times before I noticed it.
Normally a power cut doesn't effect it at all, and it reconnects at the same profile.

Oh well, all these things are sent to try us!

Mike.

Since coming to these forums I've noticed that ADSL seems to send an awful lot of things to try us.

ADSL Max rather more so than just ADSL, as in this case. It's a simpler life on most LLU connections.

Just as a matter of interest, how often does ADSL max check for sync to raise the Profile figures; every hour, 6 hours, every day, etc. Realise it's an ongoing thing.
Still stuck at 3500 since this morning.

I don't know. I assume BT must have published details of the algorithm they use somewhere but I've never seen it cited. It seems to be documented by hearsay, e.g. poor sync for 75 minutes lowers profile, good sync for 3 days raises profile. I would love to see the source code (but then I'm odd).

Thanks, probably the bad 75 minutes that did it then, pity it can't correct it in the same time.
Does it ramp up in 500kb steps or just return to the original in one jump?

Back up in one step as far as I know.

Just came across this.
