Router DSL flashes though broadband modem works fi

[link to this post]

Hi all
After at least 50 hours on the phone with tiscali, BT and aol, I give up.
Anyway main problem...
I have a broadband modem (zoom adsl from PC world) connects to broadband no problems what so ever
I have 4 routers (3 new one old)
None of which find a dsl connection when plugged in
I have changed the filters at least 5 times, now that I have about 15 of them, and the cables, but still no luck
My PC is about 20cm away from the master socket, and I have filters in everywhere

I did a speed test with my modem and all seems fantastic, though the light on my router flashes and I am really lost as to why this is happening

Does anybody out there have an idea of what it could be and what I could do to get it all working?

It worked fine up until January, then one day my phone line went dead, as did my broadband, my then brand new linksys router broke too (all lights flash constantly)
It seems a strange coincidence that whatever happened this day must have done something. Though now as BT say my speeds are fine, so there can not be a fault :-(

Would be pleased to here any tips and tricks anybody might have

Thanks Trish

Line stats would include upstream and downstream attenuation and Noise margin or SNR in dB. All very technical, but almost essential to getting a grasp of what your line is up to.

In your case however, the seepds are so good, that there is not too much wrong with the line, so the question remains, why do the routers not work? So, are you trying them in the same socket and with the same filter as the modem? When you run your routers can you get to their config pages?

Hi, I have 2 sockets and have tried both. Same filter and even the same cable on the main socket.

I can enter the config page. With the netgear touter aol gave me, when I run a test it says Modem negotiating.

Aol thought the first router they sent was maybe broken, so sent me another, so I have had in total 4 to try with :-(

I am really puzzled by this, except that given your problems, you should try the cable that comes with the router, rather than the same cable each time.

Unless ...? You are actually plugging the phone line cable into the WAN port on the router and not into a LAN port? If you are connecting the PC to the router using USB, it's an easy mistake to make, the phone line cable will plug into an ethernet port.

Hi
I connect the router via ethernet cable, and the phone line cable into the internet socket, have also tried with the cable that came with the router, but still no joy :-(
Something very strange going on here...
About the only thing I could ever do with a router was connect one and set it up, have had routers for the past 5 years and never had trouble up until now :-(

My linksys router broke one day (after my whole phone line went down)

and since then, the routers don't find anything anymore

I'm stumped. Take your routers to a friend with broadband and try them in the line, to see if they synch. Make sure that if they do synch, keep the phone line cable and the router together - don't even unplug the cable in case you put it in the other way around.

At this point, the evidence points to you having a heap of broken routers....

Hi again

I have tried them at my Dads and they all work there, I really don't know what's going on here, though I didn't keep the cable in and all that. That I will try.

I have a belkin router and on there, the light goes on, stays on for a few secs and then goes off again.
