Slow Download Speeds

[link to this post]

Hi
This is my first post, so here goes. I am having problems with slow dowload speeds for a couple of days now. Tests form this site range from at best 156kbps to 28 kbps, which for a dsl is a bit slow!!! Upload speeds are constant at about 380 kbps.
Previously, back in Jan, download speeds were around 5 - 6 Meg.

ISP Pipex dsl max. Line length 1.5 Km.
Router Netgear DG834
downstream modem 7616 kbps line att. 31 dB noise 9 dB
upstream 448 kbps 9 db 24 db

Normal checks done, changed router (spare), Changed bt front plate, used different PC.
still no change. ISP state looking into problem. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nigel

There don't appear to be any problems with your line to the exchange.

Check out your profile at

http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

At the moment your problems would seem to be caused by contention with other users.

Hi John
Thanks for the reply, have tried speedtester.bt.com, and typical results are an actual throughput of at best 141 kbps, but typically around the 50 kbps. I thought about contention issues, but wouldn't these be time specific, my speeds were taken at different times of the day, with the same results.

Regards

nigel

I was more interested in the profile that BT reports. That determines the maximum speed that BT are prepared to send data to you. That would show if you had any recent problems with your line.

That would seem to be contention with other users then, your line and profile are fine.

Some ISPs have introduced various forms of traffic management. They may slow down torrents or p2p type applications during peak hours. Others may limit your speeds if they think you are downloading more than their fair use policy allows.

What does Prodigy say about your exchange? You are going to need to deal with this through your ISP regardless, your line should be giving more than 54kbps.

Hi
Generally speaking, everything sounds ok. With regards to torrents / p2p, do not use torrents, rarely use p2p. as to download limit, I have had some discussion with ISP, they have not mentioned anything regarding limits.
ISP say they are referring iussue to Bt for further investigation

I think your answer may lie in your first post (ISP Pipex). Check the Pipex forum for more horror stories.
