What causes 2 second stall

untill the middle of last week everything was OK then I get a throughput problem, after testing I find that I am getting a repeated 1 to 2 second stall. Having never heard off it I dont know the answer! can anyone help me? Thanks

Try changing the DNS servers you use and see if that helps.
Bear in mind that the cause of a delay like that could be on your own computer or internal network and nothing to do with the ADSL connection.

More info needed. What kind of traffic (browsing P2P or what)? PC system, OS firewall anti-virus? Which ISP?
To put this in context I have had two problems over the last week:-
1) The Link Scanner on new AVG 8 slows browsing down horrendously. I have turned the Link Scanner off.
2) There has been centralised problems which means some pages on somes sites failed to deliver correctly:-
