Can someone help please? (switch box)

[link to this post]

Hi all,

My small business previously had broadband provision through a Council extranet/WAN. It became unreliable so I bit the bullet and moved over to ADSL through BeUnlimited.

We went live today.

The previous setup was the connection came in through the network socket (RJ45?), then ran around our unit through a 30m (roughly) CAT5 cable then straight into a DLINK DES-1005D switchbox, then a network cable to each of the 2 PCs. This worked(s) perfectly.

I was simply expecting to utilise the same cable to unplug from the network socket and connect into the new BeBox modem/router....leaving the switchbox to work as normal and split the broadband between our two PCs.

For some reason (which I don't understand) this doesn't work?

However, if I put this cable end (which used to be the switchbox 'input') directly into either PC the broadband works flawlessly (14Mb/s to be exact!!!).

I'm no expert in this area. Does nyone have any ideas why it's not working?

I'd greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks

The BeBox should have four Ethernet ports on the back, can you get both computers working if you plug both directly into this?

The DES-1005D is just an Ethernet switch, so just splits one ethernet cable into two and should be blocking anything.

What lights are on when trying use the DES - that is a starting point, i.e. is it showing a link to the BeBox.
Secondly what IP address's are the computers getting when
a) directly connected to the BeBox
b) via the DLink

Also as with all computer stuff, try switching off the DLink and then back on.

Andrew,

Many thanks for your speedy reply.

I've been fiddling, and as a result of changing the port on the BeBox and repowering the switch box all seems to be working as it should now!!

Thanks again.

Switches are better than hubs because they handle traffic with a bit of intelligence, but this can lead to confusion sometimes.
