noise on phone line

[link to this post]

Hi all
I have this very bizarre problem on one of my phone lines, I have 2 BT lines into the house, one private one business, currently the lines both have Broadband on them one with Sky and one with Datanet. The private line suffers badly with backround hiss and crackle, I have changed the BB filter, swapped phones, swapped the routers and the crackle is always on the same line, The BT engineer came out today and checked the line and said there were no problems. He changed the master socket but no improvement. However, the noise goes away if the ADSL router is disconnected, changed the filter again, changed the router, still no change. I'm totally confused now as to what to try next,

any ideas out there

Thx

Colin

sounds like a line fault. Did you report a voice fault or a broadband one ?

Try a known good (ie, someone else's) phone in the test socket. No BB, nothing else but the phone. If the crackle continues with nothing but the phone connected, 'tis indeed a line fault.

Intermittent faults are a PITA...

The BT engineers test handset was clear as a bell on the test socket, thus the statement from them that the line was OK.

I reported a voice problem, Broadband seems OK, synch at 5.5K is about normal for my address.

If you use a filter to plug the router and phone into the test socket do you still get the noise?

Hm.

Reason I say this is that I've recently had a bit of a problem with my upstram speed dropiing like a stone, and after a few days of testing, I managed to find noise on the line with just a phone connected.

Use 17070 option 2 to get a quiet line test, and have a play with the cable where it enters the test socket - I found I could reproduce my problem by moving the cable or plug about.

You really need to find a way of reproducing the fault, or wait until it's not intermittent anymore!

In my case, a new master socket cured the problem.

Yes the router and phone are plugged directly into the test socket via a filter, the noise is on the phone but if I disconnect the router, the noise drops away, as I said previously a different router has the same effect, as do different filters!!!

That's not good. Definitely sounds like a problem - I wonder if it is a problem in the BT network that only shows up when ADSL is connected and therefore a BT voice engineer wouldn't be able to fix it. What would be more interesting would be to have a BT ADSL engineer out to test it with their test modem and test phone and see if the problem occurs.

Trouble is if it doesn't they might sting you with a bill for 150 as it will be assumed then that the problem is with your equipment.

Sounds like a classic HR-dis fault - this is a rusty joint which is acting like a crude rectifier. ADSL signals are outside the audible range, so if you're hearing them, something must be acting as a demodulator. This can either be an electronic device like the audio amplifier in a cordless or a corded phone, or could be a fault on the line like a bad crimp acting like a diode.
