ADSL2+ SNR Speed related question

[link to this post]

Hi people,

I've just got my shiny new O2 branded Thomson router set up on O2, I'm getting 11mbps download speeds and although I've put the figures from the router into the ADSL2+ Line Capability Estimator on http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx I still don't get what the maximum realistic possible speed could be and whether I need to get O2 to adjust any settings or if they are fine.
I'm quite new to this SNR business so I don't know if I'm using the correct figures, anyway here's the info:

Uptime: 0 days, 14:27:35
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,334 / 20,116
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 9.5 / 18.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 100 / 64,039
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 100 / 21
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 79 / 19

I don't like the look of errors but I don't know if they mean anything.

Any help is much appreciated.

Neil

The thing that is limiting your line speed is your noise margin. Try connecting your router directly to the test socket behind your master socket, and see what the sync speed is then. If it's higher, you need to improve your extension wiring. You could also remove the ring wire (wire #3) from all sockets if you have extensions. The FEC errors are not really important.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,334 / 20,116

it isn't going to go much faster

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.5

a suitably low target, helps up the speed

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 9.5 / 18.0

a fairly short line.

If only getting 11Mbps from any source with a 20Meg sync then its time to look at tweaking MTU and RWIN settings on the computer, take a peek at http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks
