using your own router

I have a vigor 2700 and don't seem to be able to get the same performance as the router O2 game me. I get average connections of 7.6 mbs but on my O2 router I can often get 12mbs. I assume it must be down to configuration but i've experimented a lot and if I ever get a connection of 10 mbs it seems random. The reliability of this router is still much better than the O2 one, it rarely disconnects and even when it does it can reconnect in no time, whereas the O2 one sometimes disconnects dozens of times a day and it takes 3 times as long to reconnect as my vigor one. So If possible I want to find a way to get better performance from my own router.

I have heard that you can contact O2 to modify some of your settings to improve the connection.. I have even removed my bt faceplate and plugged into the test socket (am ordering an adsl nation faceplate too) can anyone help me out here?

I don't think that's configuration as such, more that the Draytek is connecting at a stable rate, while the O2 one is connecting at an (unreliable) higher rate. Probably more to do with the ADSL chipset than anything else.

If O2 do anything, it would probably be around adjusting the noise margin so that the router syncs at a lower rate, just like the Draytek does now.

I suspect you have to choose between sync speed and stability here.

The Vigor 2700 is using an older and less compatible ADSL modem, this means it can't support certain enhanced features found on O2s equipment. The best performing routers to use on Be/O2 are those that contain Broadcom chips as that is what Be/O2's equipment uses. The 2700 uses a chip from another manufacturer.

If you were with Be you could ask for a special profile that turns off some of the extra Broadcom features which might allow the 2700 to connect faster although it would still be slower than the supplied router. Also turning off these features may see the line being less stable.

With O2 I don't think they will make these changes for you.

Basically the 2700 is outdated and will not work at the best speed your line can support.
