Nildram ISP, BT line SNR issues using DG834GT

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have a DG834GT patched to the current highest firmware level.

Over the weekend my line's SNR dropped dramatically to less than 4.

Friday I was not able to maintain a stable connection, my SNR when I did get a connection late in the evening was around 4db. Saturday saw a stable connection and the ability to support my colleagues during a go-live.
On sunday the connection dropped again, and I have yet to achieve a resync successfully. When I do get a sync, the SNR is around 1db, so obviously something is wrong with the line. I have unwired everything except the master socket, and attached the modem and only the modem. Also I have tried a number of different RJ11 leads.

My question is this, can someone please tell me what the values for the command "adslctl configure --snr" are and their meaning.
Is it a percentage of the default snr of 10db? Or is it a logarithmic scale?

Any ideas would help or any further troubleshooting tips before BT come out and try to charge me lots of money.

TIA

What do you mean by "I have yet to achieve a resync successfully" ?

SNR figures are pretty meaningless without the accompanying sync speeds. You shouldn't have to mess about with the router settings to achieve a stable connection. It's best to post the full details reported by your router - sync speeds, SNR margins, line attenuations, FEC errors, etc.

It's a percentage but you'd be wasting your time trying to force a higher snr - and you shouldn't need to.

If nothing has changed inside your home, something must have happened to the line. Possibly water in a junction box or a fallen tree branch somewhere.

Contact Nildram.

Zebedeee,

I mean that my router has since yesterday been unable to maintain a stable ADSL connection. It connects, then negotiates a connection sometimes then it drops as the SNR drops and it cannot maintain a connection.

My line is an IP stream connection provisioned at 2Mb and typically my SNR is around 5-7db

Attenuation is 60db.

Thanks

John,

I have BT coming out to look at the voice quality on my line as it is extremely poor, Nildram have been as much use as balls on a bishop.

I am hoping to kill two birds with one stone, as I am convinced that the poor SNR is also affecting my call quality.

If this gets sorted then the overal improvement will help the ADSL figures.

What speed are you actually synching at when you do get connected?

A similar thing happened to me on a previously reliable 2mb Nildram line. It turned out I had been what is known as "Tiscali'd", and I had been moved to an "up to 8mb/s" product, which was having trouble keeping a connection at the default target SNR.
