I'm using Virgin Media's adsl service, with a Netgear DG834GT. No problems since I moved to this property a couple of years ago.
Last week, the router lost sync sometime during the day, and it would not return. Tried all the usual (master NTE, new filter, new cable), all with no joy, so I assumed exchange problem and reported through Virgin.
Just to make sure, the next day I borrowed a Draytek 2820, connected to the line, and hey presto, immediate sync. Try the Netgear again, no sync. At this point I thought I was safe to assume that the Netgear had come to the end of its life, so ordered another.
New Netgear arrives, plug it in, and you've guessed it, no sync. Does not even run the setup wizard, as there is no DSL signal.
So do I have two duff DG834GTs ?
For some reason at this point I decided to try the DG Team version of the firmware for the Netgear (I perhaps hoped I would get more diagnostics than with the standard firmware). And yes, this synced. It does take quite a while to sync, but it does get there. (Just to make sure, return to the standard firmware, and no sync.)
With the unofficial firmware I'm getting a pretty good signal (I think!). I'm syncing at 6840, with SNRM of 6.4. Can even tweak the SNRM to 3.9 to get 7680 bps.
I will try the Netgear on another adsl line later this week, but as this one does sync with different firmware, I'm not sure what that will tell me.
Does any one have any ideas a) what is going on here, and b) how I get Virgin/BT/Netgear to fix this ? (Did try reporting to Netgear who just said to return the new router!).
Many thanks
Lloyd
