Very Slow After Downloading

[link to this post]

Hey

Ok I live in the country in Scotland and pay for 8Mb broadband from Virgin media. It isn't that fast, but usually when I am doing a constant download in my download manager I can get 700-900 KB/sec

However, I have these continuous issues. Normally the speed is great but always after I download flat out for say an hour or two hours (like today downloading fedora core) it slows down to 50 KB/sec

I can reboot my router, disconnect and reconnect but nothing will work to get my speed before back - and the change is usually quite sudden.

How can I stop this from happening, because it is really annoying? I now need to wait until tomorrow to finish.

Edit: Here are the stats from my router taken now (currently stopped downloading as it's too slow):

Are you Virgin ADSL rather than cable?

It sounds like you are being throttled by your ISP once you download more than they like you to. Have you looked through the Virgin forums lower down in the list?

Yes, it is ADSL broadband.

I know Virgin throttle you to like half or something after a certain amount, but now it's below dial-up speeds.

You could check your modem stats to confirm you are still connected to the exchange at your normal speeds.

See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php

I was with Virgin ADSL and I left because of slower than dial-up speeds during some evenings. I'd assumed that those sort of capacity/congestion problems had been sorted by now.

Hi Calumn,

If you are on cable, Virgin will throttle you if you download more than a small amount between, I think, 10 am and 3 pm and again between 4 pm to 11 pm.

I don't know whether that also applies to ADSL.

Regards,

Felix
