Tweaking Target SNR - Any RIsk?

[link to this post]

I am considering playing around with target snr margin with DMT and/or RouterStats. I have a DG834N and am on a BT Broadband Interleaved line, synced at 8mbs, with an average download speed of 6mbs and a snr margin of between 9 and 10. Is there any risk of doing so or can I simply revert back to default snr without any risk of instability or erratic sync or my profile being disrupted? Thanks

P.S I previously raised my target snr margin with dmt, when I was on a LLU connection with Bulldog with good effect.

As I see it, now you're on IPStream, you possibly run the risk of annoying BT's DLM and it'll stick you on a low profile for a week. Keep a close eye on it and, if it looks like it's going to be unstable, let it resync (to default back to the BT target) and leave it.

It's probably on a 9 dB profile for a reason so you could end up chasing your tail.

I can remember a TBB user (DrT I believe) over-cooked things and ended up messing up his Target SNR.

So my advice would be to make small changes, not one big one!

Are you on ADSL rather than ADSL2/+? If you are you are already sync'd at the maximum rate so there is no point to playing with your target SNR margin.

I remember doing this also sometime back.

The main problem arose when i decided to stop using dmt tool because my new router would not support this. I found that my snr was stuck on 19db with a lousy low sync.
What was required was for bt to re-set my line. This was impossible for BT support.. If i remember it took a couple of months for the auto DLM process to finally correct itself.
The important factor is ensure that your house wiring is ok and then leave your router on 24hrs day with out any re-boot..
The auto DLM process finally worked and i am now back on 6db srn. The earlier post regarding tweaking and up setting the auto DLM process in my view is correct.

Thanks all. Actually my intention was to raise my snr slightly to reduce errors - although this is probably completely pointless as my connection seems fine at the moment and I've already been advised that my rate of errored seconds (about 80 a day) is not significant... smile
