Forgot to ask did you try another ethernet cable or is that the same one you used before?

I tried 3 other ethernet cables plus the one that i am using for the playstation 3 which in total is 4.

Anyway i took the xbox power from the plug socket and tried it in the extension with the rest of the stuff but the light on the hub remains Orange.

So i went up to the pc upstairs and changed the Duplex settings set from Auto [correct] to 100 mb full duplex mode

Now the interesting thing here is the light on the hub still remained orange but i downloaded a game from xbox live arcade at around 130 meg which downloaded extremly fast in less than 10 minutes.

Now this might be because of the changes made but im not convinced as i think its was a xbox live issue.

Why the light remains orange is a mystery opposed to Green on the playstation 3,but i will not be worried as long as the download speeds are as good as they was last night on test.

The duplex settings only affect the link between the device and the switch port they are connected to. So, changing the duplex settings on your PC only affects it and its interaction with your router. It could affect your PC's throughput, but shouldn't make a difference to the Xbox.

Changing the duplex settings on the Xbox or the PS/3 will affect the link between them and the GS605 switch. While this could affect throughput to the devices it wouldn't cause the powerline adapter to fall back to a slower rate.

Like Gzero said, the Xbox's power supply might be putting out more electrical noise than the PS/3. If you really want to get to the bottom of it, then you could try plugging the Xbox into a different circuit if you have a suitably long extension lead - it may make a difference. But remember, at 50-80Mb/s, even on the mid-range the powerline connection will be running "up to" 10x faster than your broadband link.

Just out of interest Steve do you know where the Duplex setting is because there is no mention of it anywhere on the xbox 360 network settings.

I have looked at the Playstation network settings and noticed in the list that it does mention Duplex and this is set to Auto detect.

Yes that should be true - your ADSL link is still the limiting factor.

I'm afraid I don't, as I don't have a 360 (although I'm tempted by the MW2 Super Elite bundle at Game - but that's a topic for a different place)

In general with good (CAT5e) cables and modern switches this is the correct setting. Only in special circumstances would you need to change it.

I think I know what might be the problem If I'm reading this correctly.
You're netgear gs605 is called an 'unmanaged' switch. This means just plug in your cables and leave it alone. But, unless the piece of equipment connected to it has the settings (Duplexing etc) to make the throughput (speed) 10MBs, 100Mbs or 1Gbits connect at one of those speeds, you may get this jumping from one to the other.
The Xbox seems not to have a networking setting to allow this, and therefore it would appear it is moving from 10, 100, 1Gb. This can cause many problems. Which is one you are suffering from.
Unfortunately the switch you have is not an 'smart' switch. Which can stop this happening, but they are expensive.

Thanks silvryn for the nice picture set up of networks and how to get started,i am actually connected like the pictures but as you know there is no Duplex setting to configure on the xbox 360.

It is downloading better at the moment but has a orange light and not a Green light like the playstation 3,regardless of what i change or do the xbox 360 remains as it is.

The av plugs for a set were about £90 so are you suggesting another type and if so what.

The avplugs are fine. No need to change them.

You mean the hub i have the ethernet leads connected to then out of that into the consoles.

I have tried going direct from the av adapters and not using the hub/switch but it made little to no difference when downloading on that day in question.

Last time i downloaded the xbox 360 downloaded at a very fast pace which was all good apart from the confusion as to why its a orange light and not green like playstation 3.
