regular timeouts when pinging external sites

Hi guys - quick question:

I just got a line installed. DSL just enabled. I have a 3meg conneciton from Eircom in Ireland.

Using a BT Voyager 2110 : Here are my stats - Anything ook unusual?

Your stats seem fine to me (with a slight proviso given the relatively high number of corrected errors for the time period).

You could try a traceroute to some sites to see which hops are slow (e.g. from Windows command prompt tracrert www.rte.ie ).

I can ping literally any site and get 1 timout out of every 4 attempts...

If i get this ping sorted then I assume that this strehgth of 39 could take a 7 Mb connection.

I don't know why your pings should be so poor. I'd expect that to be reflected in your (uncorrectable) error counts.

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx suggest a maximum sync rate of 5636Kbps on standard ADSL (and potentially of 11271Kbps if you get an ADSL2+ connection).

RS Correctable Errors (normally referred to as FEC errors) are very bursty in nature, e.g. that number of errors could have happened in just a second or so of line interference.

I've only seen that level of ping errors over a radio connection. Are you connecting to your router via wireless?

You in Dublin? Does Eircom use the ring wire like BT does?

I can't remember how Eircom deliver their broadband but I think that we can assume that it's broadly similar to the UK. My memory is terrible - I was in Loughgur less than a year ago but I blame the Guiness!
Have you checked your internal cabling etc? Is there an NTE5 type main telephone socket with a test facility?
Your SNRM is a little high and the error counts would suggest that there's a "line fault" present. This line fault may well be inside your premises which is why I asked about your telephone socket type.
