Help Setting Targe SNR with RouterStats or DMT

[link to this post]

I am using a Netgear Dg834n and can't seem to alter the target snr margin with either of those tools. Can anyone help or advise? Thanks (P.S I am on BT Maxdsl)

what have you tried and where did it go wrong ? details probably required for anyone to help.

From memory so I may be wrong..

I don't think Routerstats offers any way to adjust target margin (at least it never used to when I last looked at it).

With DMT you have to enable the facility by checking unlock experimental area in the options. Make sure you have the correct version for your router. I'm not 100% certain that target margin tweaking is available on all routers anyway - certainly on the TG585v7 running O2 firmware you can't and the 585v6 running f/w later than 6.1.4.3 is untweakable.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks for both of your replies. WIth DMT, I did unlock experimental area and slid the snr margin slider down to about 50% and clicked apply/resync. With Routerstats, I set target noise margin and clicked set "target noise margin." In neither case did it make any difference - my router continued to show the default value of 10db.

just a thought......from memory, on Netgears you have to log on in DMT in a particular way, something about "disable special logon" option...does this help ??

That'd be 'Enable special logon'.

I have "enable special log on" ticked. Otherwise DMT does not recognise my router (DG834N).

Not sure what you mean by "DMT doesn't recognise my router". In DMT, are you seeing the graphs for your line, the line data, and a blue box in the bottom LH corner showing basic details of your router? This may seem a dummy's question to ask but are you sure your're properly logged in to DMT, and therefore into the router? And did you press Appy/Resync after dragging the SNR pointer to your new setting? Possibly, you've taken the SNR way too low. Accordingly, have you tried a gentler transition toward a higher sync speed? (I take it that that's your end goal?).

According to the DMT website, Netgear versions 834GT/NB/PNB are compatible with DMT V8.07. Although this list is by no means fully up-to-date, there are, I think, some models of 834 that definitely aren't compatible (because they don't use the Broadcom chipset). Some of the 834s v2 and v3 aren't. 834v4 is okay, though (wired version).

The dg834n I use does use the broadcom chipset. I am able to get dmt to work with this when I have special log on enabled. But When I adjust the slider, I still get the normal snr margin reported.

Make sure the router has telnet enabled with http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=debug in a browser.

Open a Windows Command Prompt and type telnet 192.168.0.1 <enter>

When you get the BusyBox prompt, type: adslctl configure --snr 80 <enter>

If nothing happens, the command must be disabled in the router's firmware.

John.
