Speed Drop. Because of router?

[link to this post]

Hello,

Did a search before i posted. Had speed problems randomly a few days back. i contacted sky and they changed the line to a more "stable" speed after i emailed them my line attenuation and noise margin. This seemed to work but after a while the speed dropped from 7.4Mbps to 1.6mbps and hissing on the phone line. Did a BT quiet line test without the router plugged in and got a clear line no hissing. Changed filters and still the same problem. I would post my LA and NM stats but as i've been fiddling its at high speed atm but still phone hissing, but i know it will go down. When i emailed sky to get the change these were the stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 921 kbps 657 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.5 db 25.5 db
Noise Margin 29.9 db 13.0 db

Any ideas? I don't want to have to fiddle with my other netgear router to test, i'm quite tempted to phone sky and get them to send me a new router.

Thanks for any info.

Have you removed faceplate and plugged in directly to the test socket? Does it still hiss then?

Were the speed problems related to a similar time you put any xmas lights up?

Your snr is very high, normally sits between 6-12db, but this will be increased to compensate any errors/faults on the line.

Has anything improved over the 40 hrs since your original post?

See if you can borrow a router from someon, to try a new one, also trying a different microfilter, they do die sometimes.

Argos do one, but that's pretty expensive compared to some of the other shops online you can get them from, by about a tenth of the argos cost!

Thanks again for your reply.

I have indeed already tried what you posted. Borrowed sky router from my brother same problem but only dropped to around 3.6mb. Tried 3 microfilters, no change. Phoned sky, they were as confused as me. They contacted local exchange, nothing wrong. Right now router states 7.4mb, but running the thinkbroadband speed test i'm only getting 4mb.

Sky are going to send me a the new black router, so fingers crossed that works.

Other than that i am completely stumped.

I am sure others will chip in to help sort your problem out smile I can't really think of too much else to help you with, you have definately removed the ringwire etc?

Aha!

i've recently installed an i-plate, so from reading that, it has the same effect as removing the bell wire. And unfortunately the crackling and dismal internet connection are still here.

Well it won't help if the test socket didn't ("Tried test socket at the start of my troubleshooting and still got hissing").

Have you got any phone extensions? They should go dead if you use the test socket, do they?
