I have two lines, with BB on both, the ISPs are Enta and Plusnet.
The lines have always worked at different speeds but have both slowed down to about half their usual speed.
Looking at my router logs and stats I can see that they are both disconnecting about 6 or 7 times a day. When suspicious of the speed, I dip in and have a look and find that my main router has reconnected at a low sync, so I reboot it and it goes back to normal, however my profile only just recovers in time for it to do it again.
Could this be related to the current snow or cold condition in the Durham area? and if so is there any point in trying to get anything done about it until a thaw?

The weather is causing a problem quite likely. Of course snow should have no effect really on a telephone line that is maintained by BT and free of faults!
If you have any of your phone lines go overhead the weight of snow and ice might be causing extra pull on the joints causing intermittent breaks and crackles, can you hear any noise on the line, if so you could try reporting it as a voice fault. Also water freezing in junction boxes will also move things about as the water expands when it freezes.
Probably no point trying to get it fixed, as it probably will not be looked at with any urgency during the cold snap unless you are unable to make/receive any calls, and when the thaw arrives it might fix itself and they'll find no fault anyway.

Thank you for your response. I will wait till the snow clears and if things don't improve start the process. I found the test number on here that you can ring for a silent call tried it and did not hear any crackles, but I am sure you are right, it would not exactly be a priority for a BT team in this weather. It would be nice to know that the leaky box is not going to do it again though when the weather clears.

I have never read so much rubbish in my life! The only way snow if affecting performance is either it is blocking a microwave link - or everyone is stuck at home using the Internet.
You do realise that cables are held before leaving slack and then terminating them?
A wire isn't joined on to put a joint under extreme tension!
All BT junction boxes are injected with a resin at a customer's property, so water doesn't get in. The ones on poles and under the road are a watertight design.
If you have no knowledge of what is wrong, don't just invent things!
Do everyone a favour. The fault is down to his ISP handling far more traffic than normal, not having the required bandwidth and limiting what users can do. The ISP will never admit this, but we know which companies do it the most.

It's not just down to the ISP. Congestion at the exchange OUTSIDE of the ISPs network can also be to blame such as hot VPs.
So, whilst the ISP may not have any issues in their network - there may be issues outside of their network which they have little to no control over.

So joints never get water in them, they never corrode, cables never snag due to wind, ice or snow? So we should never have our phone line fail or crackle then, so what causes bad connections I wonder?

The DSLAM will not drop sync due to congestion or oversubscribed networks, maybe if you bothered to read the OP or had some knowledge of such things you would yourself know that and would not have been so rude or patronising.

A wire isn't joined on to put a joint under extreme tension! Ah so snow is not ice, which thaws and turns to water and seeks out every vulnerable hole in the network. Snow & ice that collects on overhead cables and causing them to stretch and damages the cables.
I don�t think you realise lower temperatures cause the wire in connections in the IDCs to contract and of itself can cause noise and crackle.

The BB equipment will first attempt to load share by slowing everyone down and finally if it is overwhelmed by the load will drop connections to protect the overall network.
