O2 Broadband connection speed

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

Forgive me if this is in the wrong place!
I have had a look around the forums and managed to get all the information from my O2 Wireless Box.
I am meant to get 18mbps with O2 on ADSL2+, and the router is syncing at that speed, but I'm lucky to get close to 9 - found this out with various speed test sites - all results were between 8 and 9.
I will provide router/line stats if anyone has any idea where the problem is, please let me know, I've only just learned one or two things today after speaking to O2. He changed the port and the wifi channel, but it's made no difference (don't see why it would anyway).
Thanks guys smile

Repeat the speedtests using ethernet.

The most likely culprit is going to be the WiFi and that will either confirm it or rule it out.

http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider is probably the best freebie tool for checking what interference your WiFi will get from other APs.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

I can't believe it!! The Wifi does appear to be the culprit, and I can see there are about 12 other wifi signals across all channels, nevertheless I assigned channel 10 since it was slightly clearer, but no boost to the signal sadly and with a laptop it's not easy trying to route an ethernet cable around. The ethernet shows the connection at 15.6mbps...damn wifi!! Thanks for the help though at least now I know what was causing it, and I blamed O2 for nothing! Oops!

I have seen the same behaviour with WiFi too, and concluded that the O2 box is a bottleneck when combining modem and wireless functions. However, the O2 box will deliver the full wireless speed across your LAN (~22 mbps)

I have got full wireless speeds via the internet by adding a separate WAP.

See this topic for reference:

bebox only giving me 10mbps on wireless

It is possible that the be firmware version 8 fixes this bug/feature, but I've not been brave enough to flash my O2 box

If you are using Windows XP it may be worthwhile to try the freeware TCPOptimizer to tune your internet settings.
